iOS 11.4 battery drain
[Re-Titled by Host]
[Re-Titled by Host]
To everyone having battery issues on iOS 11.4.
What has everyone tried?
Have any of you tried a hard reset of your iPhone 6/6S by holding down both the Home and sleep/wake buttons until your iPhone goes to black and restarts with Apple logo, then release the buttons?
How much free data storage space is left on your iPhone?
iDevices need to always maintain, at the very least, between 2-3 GBs, OR GREATER, of free data storage space.
In Settings app, under General settings, Reset panel, at the right bottom of the list, Reset All Settings.
In Settings App, Battery, check to see if any apps/processes are eating up your battery.
In Settings app, General settings panel, turn OFF Background App Refresh for any apps you feel do not need constant data updating/Internet updating in the background when not using the an app OR turn OFF Background App Refresh entirely/globally for the entire device.
Do the same in the Settings app under Notifications.Turn off notifications for apps you do not think you need notifications for and/or edit the different ways you receive notifications to help with performance by not always using all the notification methods together.
In Settings app under Mail, you may want to set a longer fetch time or set your iOS Mail app to only manually fetch your mail ONLY when you launch the iOS Mail app.
In Settings app (NOT from the iOS Control Panel) turn OFF Bluetooth when not using any Bluetooth devices.
Also, in general, if you want a faster IDevice, on all of my iDevices, I turn off most of the iOS motion graphics eye candy, by simply turning ON Reduce Motion in Settings app, General, Accessibilty settings.
Make sure you aren't running 30 -50 OR EVEN MORE background apps in the iOS 11 Control Panel/App Switcher.
If you are, you need to quit the bulk of these background running apps by tap and hold a finger on an app window in the switcher and slide your finger upwards to quit an app. You should be able to use more than one finger to quit more than one app window simultaneously.
Also, make sure you don’t have 20-50 OR A WHOLE LOT MORE of active website tabs running in the web browser.
If you do, greatly reduce the amount of active website tabs your web browser.
Some minority of user have been turning ON and leaving ON iCloud backups continuously backing up on a constant and daily basis.
If you are one of these users, in Settings App, tap your Apple ID, then tap iCloud, then find iCloud backup and turn off iCloud backup and only turn this on to do daily backups either when you are not using your iPhone for a prolonged period of time (like when you are sleeping), then turn iCloud backups OFF when actually using your iPhone.
OR
Only perform your backups on a lesser time schedule.( like twice a week, once a week, once every two weeks, once a month, etc.).
Any large amount of background running apps or active processes that have to constantly go out to the Web to fetch data ALL THE TIME is going to slow down ANY iDevice and also, severely impact battery life.
In addition to all of the possible fixes and solutions presented, another iPhone 6S user, in another single posting in the iPhone support communities, suggested to go into Settings, General, Accessibility, Increase Contrast and turn ON Reduce Transparency.
Your iPhone 6/6S won’t look as pretty, but that user reported that his iPhone 6/6S speed improved considerably.
If none of this, so far, has helped your iPhone 6,/6S,
What about doing a complete backup to iCloud or iTunes on a computer, then do a complete erase and reset as new in the Settings app under General, Reset then restore your backup from iCloud or iTunes?
If still no joy after the erase and restore, hammer Apple with constant feedback about the iPhone 6/6S issues here.
iPhone Feedback
http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html
This is THE ONLY avenue to get Apple’s DIRECT attention to any and all iPhone 6 issues!
IF no one continues to post regular feedback about iPhone 6/6S issues, Apple will NEVER know there is an issue and will never correct it!
Cognizant Apple employees read ALL feedback generated from all of the various feedback pages and transfers the data to the appropriate Apple personnel , but NO Apple employees will ever respond with any type of direct, individual replies from the feedback you post.
Good Luck to You All!
You have hopes ! They are probably the most shameless company in the world. Why else would they lock out every independent manufacturer from making anything compatible and charge dollar for a dime worth of hardware?
I think they are going to be thoroughly ****** off with something I read today. Someone has come out with a inductive (wireless ) charger for their phones and watches.Best part is it can charge both simultaneously. They most certainly don't have the technology to measure the magnetic strength or field pattern to disallow this. So how will they sell their exorbitantly priced cordless chargers? Or will they revert back to strictly wired charging only so they can continue to gouge their customers ?
One thing is certain. Not spending a penny more on absolutely anything Apple.
I don't think it is a battery issue at all. I read it differently.
They have some kind of sensor routine in software that recognises the attached charging cable for authenticity. Now this will either throw an error message and trigger another routine that prevents charging of the device. Sohow some one effed it up and the routine / sub routine goes haywire and does not read the battery level correctly and triggers a shutdown / reboot or what ever. Just goes on to show that they don't really have the collection of the smartest software engineers. What else can explain almost instant change to bad behaviour of the battery in 2 hours. A perfect case for "before and after being f***ed".
I was locked out of my iPad itself. After this update it wanted to re-authenticate my identity. That was something that has never happened in the past. Unfortunately it would not remain on long enough for me to enter my username password and the additional answers it required. It would simply go into reboot cycle even when the battery level was at 90+%. I finally managed it online from my desktop PC with the help of LastPass. The GUI was not exactly user friendly nor intuitive.
Of course you would not agree to the update if you were forewarned. That is the reason why. How else are they going to get you to spend more money ?
I believe this version was in Beta for more than a year. I have a feeling they pushed it out before it was ready. There is no such thing as high performance update. Only thing I see is the **** thing rebooting every minute or two. I don't see any speed improvements over earlier state. BTW I have 100 mbps connection so that is not a constraint. It was running fine until this update. So was the battery.
My reason for buying the iPad was Facetime only, for chatting with my granddaughters on their iPods who live half a world away. Now that they have grown up and got their iPhones, I am trying to talk my daughter into installing Google Duo on their phones. Incidentally it is a far better application even under really slow internet connectivity. Once they do I will just dump my iPad. Most certainly not buying another Apple product.
It is so typical of them. I did not have any problem with my iPad until the latest update to 11.4.1. I am not sure if it was updated from 11.4.0 or an earlier version. The worst part of such experience is they can lie to your face even when they know the problem is not with the product or the battery but the OS. Unlike the Android system or any other computing platform you can't downgrade the OS. I can't understand the logic of it. May be they think they are God's gift to the users.
They don't care about people like us because they know they have lost us for ever. I can accept slowing down of the device when there is much greater demand on resources by additional features by way of processing power or memory but just killing of the device is a big no-no. I have Samsung and Xiaomi phones varying in age from 10 to 1 year old. Even on the 8 and10 year old phones the ORIGINAL battery still lasts for more than 24 hours on a single charge.
I really think the problem with Apple is:
1. The refuse to admit there is a problem
2. They are afraid that if they admit there is a problem it will affect their stock
3. They are not communicating to their support people about the reported problems or how to try to handle the issue
4. They probably believe it is a small percentage of iPhones having the issue
5. They are focused on 12 to fix MANY problems
6. They really don't care.
Just wait until they come out with the iCar (I assume that will be what they call it) planned in a few years
Then just wait on the side of the road until the next SW release comes out 🙂
You are right on all counts.
(1) True
(2) More afraid to lose their job
(3) Support people are only trained in 3 things. Offer a replacement at like new cost. or demand exorbitant amount for changing the battery or talk you into buying a new one.
(4) More like very small percentage of affected people who can get to one of their "non-service centers".
(5) 12 is simply not happening for the affected devices. The device has to remain on long enough for it to be updated, In my case it keeps rebooting every couple of minutes. Even when connected to the charger.
(6) Right on the money.
If and As and When they come out with an iCar it will have following restrictions & limitations & features.
1. They can be charged only if the power comes from a power station owned or licensed by Apple.
2. If you have ANY device on you running any OS other than Apple then either the car will keep announcing for the device to be switched off or will simply run the battery down and leave you stranded.
3. Only music that will play must be from their own store.
4. They will expect you to have the car towed to a service center where they will ask you for your right arm and left leg to charge and update the OS to the next version.
I am a 72 year old person living alone. Why do I even need face ID or lock screen? I just need it to run smoothly so I can video chat with FaceTime with my 10 and 12 year old granddaughters living half way across the globe.
It is an iPad Mini II. But why should it matter? There is a methodology for predicting failures. It is not like they have 1000 different models of products that they would be hard mressed to keep track of. I know a
that all the aircraft manufacturing companies have planes flying around the globe that have logged several thousand more hours than any plane in commercial service. It is not even like say M$ OS where you can literally have a jillion combinations and permutations of hardware by independent manufacturer. It is their own captive hardware. One can bet that they have no more than say 50 to 60 different models/combination in the market.
Actually I miss those old time PDAs which held the OS on a non volatile mask rom which could be re-installed to revert back to factory default state. I can do something similar even with the current tablets with flashable roms. But that is on Android devices. I have even managed to unbrick a rooted Nexus 7 with USB cable and CLI on my desktop PC. Why something like that is not provided for by Apple is not know even by the big guy in the sky!
This is an older iPad model A1474 - iPad Air. I’ve never had any issues with it until updating to 11.4 and the 11.4.1 did not seem to fix my problem anyways on this iPad. If models of iPads get too old for some iOS, APPLE should suggest to this owners not to upgrade to the latest iOS because of possible issues. Unfortunately APPLE does not give you a choice, you just are constantly reminded that they have release a new iOS. As an IT person, APPLE should allow owners to roll-back an iOS if it creates problems. They could allow this by also stipulating that rolling back to older iOS may mean you have an older device and should consider upgrading it if problems occur with newer versions of iOS they are releasing. This way, both customers and APPLE have shown responsibility while deploying or forcing updates.
The closest Apple Store is about 4 hours away for us here!
@leemarshall22 - My troubleshooting/experience is that while it is most certainly a software (and not battery) problem, it is not location services. iOS 11 is so hole-y (as opposed to holy), if I were Tim Cook I'd be instructing my teams to *fix the problems* rather than roll out exciting new features. (But that's just one characteristic that separates me from him.) A lotta folks are waiting to see what happens with iOS 12 and will jump ship accordingly. 2018 4th-quarter could be very painful for Apple.
1. I was trying to fix my phone this morning and i did many many things..and trying to hear music put remove the headphone jack several times..cleaning it..suddenly the phone switched back to volume mode from headphone mode😁
so imagine whats happening with the phone.
2. After reading all i found one great solution to get out of this battery issue is to keep the phone in aeroplane mode all the time and switch to normal mode only when you want to call someone😝 all the best guys. right now really enjoying my other new phone nokia 7 plus..which gives me 2 days of back up with moderate to heavy use..thanks hmd global
@afromprescott - yeah i use my phone for work more and for personal use too. its a pain of spending INR 50000 or USD740 just a year back and phones battery let you down very badly and you need to carry a good powerbank all the time with you. its disgusting situation for sure. Definitely its not an exaggeration by anyone posting over here
iPhone SE, 1 year old. Used to get 2-3 days of life.
Upgrade to iOs 11.4 (and 11.4.1), and now I get 4-5 hours.
I am on call 24 hours a day and this is seriously impacting my ability to perform my job. Get ready for a lawsuit should damages occur to my company or clients due to a missed page due to a drained battery. A good friend of mine, Dr. T, also experienced extreme phone drain last weekend while on call. Waiting for the first lawsuit...
Would love to downgrade, but Apple is no longer signing any iOs versions.
<tinfoil>Isn't there a product launch coming up?</tinfoil>
In any case, this is the last iPhone I purchase. Tired of not having FM radio, upgrade to brick. etc...
