iOS 11.4 battery drain

My iPhone 6 was working perfectly fine until I updated to iOS 11.4 and ever since I did that my battery is draining rapidly even without me using it at all. I used to go a full day without charging it now it may last half a day. I am just wondering if something got turned on with this new update that I have to turn off to save battery life. It is just weird I have not done anything other than update the iOS and now this happening. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

To everyone having battery issues on iOS 11.4.

What has everyone tried?

Have any of you tried a hard reset of your iPhone 6/6S by holding down both the Home and sleep/wake buttons until your iPhone goes to black and restarts with Apple logo, then release the buttons?

How much free data storage space is left on your iPhone?

iDevices need to always maintain, at the very least, between 2-3 GBs, OR GREATER, of free data storage space.

In Settings app, under General settings, Reset panel, at the right bottom of the list, Reset All Settings.

In Settings App, Battery, check to see if any apps/processes are eating up your battery.

In Settings app, General settings panel, turn OFF Background App Refresh for any apps you feel do not need constant data updating/Internet updating in the background when not using the an app OR turn OFF Background App Refresh entirely/globally for the entire device.

Do the same in the Settings app under Notifications.Turn off notifications for apps you do not think you need notifications for and/or edit the different ways you receive notifications to help with performance by not always using all the notification methods together.

In Settings app under Mail, you may want to set a longer fetch time or set your iOS Mail app to only manually fetch your mail ONLY when you launch the iOS Mail app.

In Settings app (NOT from the iOS Control Panel) turn OFF Bluetooth when not using any Bluetooth devices.

Also, in general, if you want a faster IDevice, on all of my iDevices, I turn off most of the iOS motion graphics eye candy, by simply turning ON Reduce Motion in Settings app, General, Accessibilty settings.

Make sure you aren't running 30 -50 OR EVEN MORE background apps in the iOS 11 Control Panel/App Switcher.

If you are, you need to quit the bulk of these background running apps by tap and hold a finger on an app window in the switcher and slide your finger upwards to quit an app. You should be able to use more than one finger to quit more than one app window simultaneously.

Also, make sure you don’t have 20-50 OR A WHOLE LOT MORE of active website tabs running in the web browser.

If you do, greatly reduce the amount of active website tabs your web browser.

Some minority of user have been turning ON and leaving ON iCloud backups continuously backing up on a constant and daily basis.

If you are one of these users, in Settings App, tap your Apple ID, then tap iCloud, then find iCloud backup and turn off iCloud backup and only turn this on to do daily backups either when you are not using your iPhone for a prolonged period of time (like when you are sleeping), then turn iCloud backups OFF when actually using your iPhone.

OR

Only perform your backups on a lesser time schedule.( like twice a week, once a week, once every two weeks, once a month, etc.).

Any large amount of background running apps or active processes that have to constantly go out to the Web to fetch data ALL THE TIME is going to slow down ANY iDevice and also, severely impact battery life.

In addition to all of the possible fixes and solutions presented, another iPhone 6S user, in another single posting in the iPhone support communities, suggested to go into Settings, General, Accessibility, Increase Contrast and turn ON Reduce Transparency.

Your iPhone 6/6S won’t look as pretty, but that user reported that his iPhone 6/6S speed improved considerably.

If none of this, so far, has helped your iPhone 6,/6S,

What about doing a complete backup to iCloud or iTunes on a computer, then do a complete erase and reset as new in the Settings app under General, Reset then restore your backup from iCloud or iTunes?

If still no joy after the erase and restore, hammer Apple with constant feedback about the iPhone 6/6S issues here.

It's seems to be the way they operate in that you never see admission of problems, certainly not in these communities. I expect we will see a fix, maybe the fix is in beta test. Even though this community is not Apple support I do know they are watching because I have been contacted by telephone by them after I contributed to a different problem in this community. For now it's lower power mode and wifi off until the next iOS release which I hope will provide a fix.

I decided to give restore phone "as new" from iTunes one more go with no restore from a backup until the new phone proves itself.

I only re-installed 1 app - gmail. The battery dropped to 96% after a day at work. Wifi was enabled but I couldn't connect to wifi due to a work issue. This is encouraging, hoping this lasts and hopefully I can connect to work wifi tomorrow for a better test. At home the wifi is up and the battery has only dropped to 95% after a couple of hours.

I've been having the same problem ever since I updated to iOS 11.4. I can go to bed with a fully charged phone and wake up to find it stone cold dead. I went to the Apple Store suspecting a bad battery, and after the tech ran some diagnostics, he identified a known problem that Apple engineers are supposedly working on. I went home without a solution to the problem and have been living with it for several weeks now.

BUT! I decided to use low power mode one day and no more battery drain. Yes, I have to live with low power mode for the time being, but at least my phone doesn't have to be charged three times a day anymore.

Sorry but not much of a solution, but it does help somewhat.

The only way I can conserve battery is to switch to Low Power Mode.

Yesterday I was able to go from 7:30 to 2:30 and go from 100% to 69%.

This included 3 hours on WIFI. All on Low Power Mode.

My Battery Standby was about 2.5 hour greater than Usage so I wasn't using it constantly.

When I did start using for Hot Spot then the consumption went down rapidly.

It would help to be able to leave 100% on low power mode and not have it reset when it reaches 80%.

Nope. Nothing stood out, and I had already disabled background app refresh and location services prior to this. But I just found out, with a little research, that sometimes severe battery drain can happen after an IOS update, but this can resolve itself in a few days. It’s like scratching the bottom of a shaken soda can for 30 seconds to keep it from exploding when opened, or taking zinc to “cure” a cold. Was it the remedy that worked, or the waiting? I’m wondering if the problem simply resolved itself rather than my fiddling with settings.

I have been following this thread for some time and done most of the suggestions - location services, background app refresh, but someone mentioned wifi being an issue and 6s. My experience if I left my 100% charged phone without charge overnight, it drained to 7% while unused locked etc. I went out of town and turned off wifi, problem solved! I returned problem reoccurred. I also connected to wifi 5G at home. I am now trying the standard wifi and it seems to be ok. I am still on 11.4, as I am not sure about 11.4.1! I wish Apple would at least be honest and let us know if they are trying to fix this bug with 11.4.1!

Reasons for iOS 11.4 could ruin your battery life:

The higher version makes your phone to work in the advanced configuration. Maybe this is the reason to drain your battery when not in use. Anyway this one of the disadvantages of this iOS version.

Let go to the fix.

FIX 1: Problem with Wi-Fi

The problem may be with your Wi-Fi after upgrading to 11.4 some major changes happen on it. To rectify this by Switching from a 5GHz network to a 2.4GHz network. Otherwise, disable Wi-Fi.

FIX 2: Battery drain recommendations in settings

IPhone iOS will suggest some system changes to save your battery life. Some of your iPhone recommendations will appear in our tips below, but you can always check the settings for your iPhone's battery life. Let see what changes your iPhone recommends.

Steps to disable location Service:

  1. Go to Settings app.

  2. Select Battery Option, under that it will offer changing settings which will improve battery life.

  3. You can check every suggestion and choose appropriate check which needs exactly.

  4. For more details...

For me its the opposite case when i was in 11.4 my battery kept on going down extremely fast.. 3%-4% every 5 minutes of use, not to mention the drain when your phone is just on standby, Happened both on cellular and wifi mode.

Things started looking up when I updated to 11.4.1 the battery decrease is lowered even when using or on standby. I am now on 4hrs usage with 93% battery out of 100%.

Take note reduce motion, email refresh, low power mode are enabled for my phone and location disabled.

iPhone 7+ 11.4.1 user here

Good Luck.

As previously reported, after updating to ios 11.4 I suffered for extreme battery drain. My iphone 6 passed from being updated once a day to several times per day. Moreover, the battery status passed from 97% to a mere 50% in almost 30 days. Battery drain happened both with WiFi on and off. Nothing was able to reduce the drain noticeably. All were just "like tears...in rain".

After updating to ios 11.4.1 things started improving, though my iphone was not the one I used to have with 11.3.

Therefore I went to a genius bar, where I exposed the problem and asked for a battery change. Most of the guys I spoke with were aware of the problem.

Now, after three days of usage I can say that yes, ios 11.4.1 has definitely improved the situation vis a vis ios 11.4, BUT performances are not as before. If I extensively use the phone the battery charge falls more rapidly than it used to be before. I think the new updates have shift hardware usage toward a higher level.
In a year or so this iphone will definitely need to be changed, but the way it's happening it's extremely frustating as I feel forced to do that.

...Apple is not doing anything to solve this problem. We need to do something guys !

There two main issues being discussed at the moment as a result of iOS 11.4 and 11.4.1 updates, this one about excessive battery consumption and this IOS 11.4.1 and wifi problem with respect to WiFi disconnects.

It appears the WiFi issue has now attracted the attention of Apple because not only have bug reports been filed by various members but Tech Support are now contacting members of this forum (from the above discussion group) personally to talk about and gain further info. This has been ongoing now for about a week and someone has posted Apple are close to a fix after gaining some feedback during one of those exchanges.

I would advise all that are experiencing the battery issue start a similar process, namely completing bug reports and contacting Apple direct, do not accept it’s down to a bad battery and push the issue until they start to actively seek further info as they have done for the other problem.

Apple Tech do in fact read these discussions so it’s also important when posting to put as much info regarding what's been tried and if any improvement (or not) was noted while trying to keep the frustration element under control if possible.

Same situation for me. Didn’t even know it’s a software problem until after battery was replaced (and still had massive drain). I have been diligent to update to latest 11.4 and then 11.4.1 but this causes the battery draining problem (will wait a bit for future iOS releases).

The config reset back to factory setting helps a bit (still unimpressed given that I have a brand new battery now). Interestingly the factory setting has location services completely turned off. Also noticed whenever google map is used the battery drains pretty quickly. This is a wild guess maybe something with the location service part of iOS is causing this.

I think Apple really dropped the ball this time.
