Difficulties in updating the software

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone can help me with the below.

I have a Macbook Pro that had macOS Sierra 10.12.6 and it was functioning well till suddenly, it was unable to recognise external drives; i.e. though they can viewed, I was neither able to edit any file nor copy/move any file to it. I restated the machine several times and installed High Sierra 10.13.4, I was still unable to resolve the matter and couldn't change the permission under Disk Utilities. (The external drive works fine on other machines, excluding my laptop).

As a result, I have decided to restore my machine.

After several days of tons of tries, I was able to restore it, however the software is still old; OS X 10.9.5, though macOS High Sierra 10.13.5 is installed and shows no further updates are available. (kindly refer to the below screenshots)

It's really strange and I was unable to find a justification for it online.

Kindly advise as I need to install my designing applications and work on my pending designs.

Thanks,

Alya

I'm still unable to write on any external drive (read only previlages).

This problem can occur on certain major third-party drives when you follow their directions and Install their third-party Disk Utilities and Drivers, rather than erasing the drives to native macOS GUID Partition table and a native MacOS Volume.

When you install their Drivers, the drive stays formatted as a Windows New Technology File System (NTFS) drive, and a Mac Volume is simulated on top of that. This works until the requirements for the Utilities change and that third-party Driver does not meet High Sierra requirements and is NOT LOADED under High Sierra.

Microsoft considers NTFS proprietary, and requires a fee from all who WRITE that format. MacOS can read, but not write those drives natively.

In the short run, you may be able to get an updated NTFS driver from the vendor or the drive maker, or but an up-to-date NTFS Driver.

In the long run, each of those drives should be backed up to another drive, completely erased by choosing them by Hardware-name in Disk Utility, and the contents are restored from other sources such as backups.

Hello Grant,

Thank you for your help.

Well, I really can’t understand what’s going on since I upgraded to High Sierra, prior to this time, that forced me to restore my machine.

Mine is:

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013)

Processor 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7

Memory 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Graphics Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB

Storage: (currently) 469.65 GB available of 500.07 GB (Generally, not less than 300 GB free space is available in the old days)

Most of the files/backup are located on external drives to reduce the pressure on the machine

I bought my machine early 2014 and had to restore it only early 2017 and the process went very smoothly and quite fast. It resumed functioning very well till suddenly I started receiving issues after updating Sierra’s version; freezing and continuous crashing, though I had everything updated excluding High Sierra as I was hesitating to upgrade to it because of the negative reviews. I updated my Adobe Lightroom version to Classic CC 7.3 and Photoshop CC 2018 (19.1), assuming that it could be the reason behind the continuous crash of both of them. However, it went fine couple of days, till suddenly the difficulties returned again. Neither additional softwares were launched nor there was a change in the sequence of the daily performance. In addition to that, external drives kept disconnecting suddenly, though Paragon was installed. Therefore, I decided to upgrade to High Sierra when the catastrophe began. I was unable to finish even 5 minutes of continues editing. Everything was slow, navigating between files, applications and evening surfing the net was a nightmare. To an extent that my machine started crashing and restarting several times a day; to less than 3 minutes between each incident.

It forced me to restore my machine. Thanks God, I was saving most of my files on external drives, yet it consumed me several days to try to move some of the files on my machine via bluetooth as no external drive was mounting. iCloud storage never an option because of sensitive documents. And it consumed me almost three days to restore my machine.

I installed High Sierra with your help, presuming the latest version could be better, and shifted to

iBoysoft from Paragon.

Currently:

  • My machine is still slow, though the freezing duration is less a bit than before.
  • Lightroom: keeps freezing though the GPU is disabled and I reseted the preferences as instructed by Lightroomquee.com. I reported the incidents, but solution was found. In addition to that, files modification dates appear as 01/01/1970 though the creation date is correct. I neither had a problem with my battery nor the machine was unplugged to power during the restoration process (an online finding). They suggested downloading convertors, but there must be a solution rather than that. It doesn’t make sense to continue converting - in the future - each new exported file every time.
  • NTFS: external drives stop mounting suddenly.

I really don’t know what to do. Shall I restore the machine again and install Sierra? What reliable NTFS shall I buy as it seems iBoysoft and Paragon that are listed as top 3 NTFS softwares - both confirmed supporting High Sierra - are not performing? (They could be good, but the issue is with the operating system). The same applies to Adobe softwares, I really need them, but I couldn't benefit from my subscription this month because of the crashing. It is really so frustrating to keep paying for services that do not function.

Any suggestion and guidelines?!

Thank you. I managed to download High Sierra, however, I'm still unable to write on any external drive (read only previlages). Although, under Get Info, it appears that I have read and write permission, under Disk Utilities it is listed as disabled.

I need to download Ps and Lr, but there'll be no use as neither I'm unable to benefit from the data available on my external drives nor copy any new artworks to external drives.

I tried to follow the steps suggested here, but they were unhelpful.

Any suggestions?

Shall I restore my machine again, download Sierra only and ignore any update notifications?
