iOS 11.4 WiFi Problems

iOS 11.4 on iPhone 6 and iPad Pro. WiFi drops on iPad and then does not reconnect until numerous attempts, turning WiFi on/off, connecting to different network, or powering iPad on/off. Phone has no problem nor do my many Windows computers nor do my SmartTVs. It’s not my router or signal strength. Is this an iPad Pro chipset problem? Also, I have WiFi Networking turned off under Privacy setting for both phone and iPad

Go to settings and open your wifi. Select your wifi by touching the wifi name. Click on Forget This Network. Touch Forget this Network (in red to confirm). Then open up WIFI to rediscover your network and re-enter your password for your network.

This fixed my WIFI issues on iphone 6 plus and iphone 8 running ios 11.4 so far.😉

This seems to be a problem with some older router models in iOS 11.3 and 11.4 releases. I was able to fix this for my devices, that exhibited the same behavior after updating to iOS 11.4, by doing the following:

1) Factory reset the network configuration in settings. Reason being that I couldn't manage the WiFi connection from the usual menu anymore, so I couldn't make the device forget the WiFi and couldn't trigger another prompt for the password. By resetting all network configurations, I the password prompt would reappear upon conncection and initial configuration would go through properly, with the device able to connect to the internet as usual.

2) However, this fix turned out to be only a temporary one, as the device would again lose WiFi connectivity at some point, after waking the device from sleep for example. I noticed that in that case, the entry for the router / gateway IP would be empty. So the fix for this has been to factory reset the network configuration again as noted above in order to reconnect properly again - and the going into the WiFi settings and hitting the little info button next to the active WiFi connection (symbol: small "i" in a circle) and note the IP config under "IPv4 address". Copy this down somewhere and, on that same screen, tap on "configure IP", switch this from "automatic" to "manual" and fill in the exact same IP config data you noted earlier.

After that, the device has been keeping up the WiFi connectivity for several days now.

I installed 11.4.1 on all of my devices yesterday and it seems the WiFi reconnection issues have actually disappeared on the devices that were affected before (iPhone 6 & iPad Air 2). My other 2 devices are still unaffected (iPhone 7 & iPad Pro) by any connectivity issues.

Since there are theories that see 5GHz Access as the culprit or even the extended channel bandwidths, here is a short description of my network environment:

My router uses 40Mhz bandwidth on 2.4GHz and 80MHz bandwidth on 5GHz. My home network consists of a central router and 2 wireless repeaters that are all connected in a wireless mesh configuration. The SSID in use is identical on each network device and on each frequency band. According to the logfiles, all devices connect with either 5GHz or 2.4GHz depending on proximity to the router/repeater.

The only issue that remains with 11.4.1, is the fact that the mobile devices drop the WiFi connection, once you block the screen of the device. If your device does not feature an additional mobile data connection, it means that instant messages, WhatsApp messages, e-Mails and alerts will be displayed with a delay of up to several minutes.

I suppose this nagging issue will remain, because it extends the battery life of the device.

I have a workaround that appears to work. For each wifi network that you are having problems with, you can snapshot your IP and DNS settings. Next, change your settings to manually configure the network and use the same IP, subnet, gateway, DNS, etc. that you just took a snapshot of.

As a bit of background, I did not have any wifi problems with my iPhone 7 until the 11.4 update. It became annoying enough for me to experiment with workarounds.

I believe this is solely IOS 11.4, I am having the same issue with my iphone 7 right after downloading the IOS 11.4 a few days ago. I have spent 7+ hours trouble shooting with apple customer care, and have tired everything by myself and with them instructing me. They are now telling me I need to buy a new phone, and they haven't had any reports on IOS 11.4 "graying out" wifi. So I am going to try and launch the "Feedback" app and report this IOS 11.4 bug issue there (according to the apple lady thats the only way to get heard, thus the more who report the IOS 11.4 bug the sooner they will start looking at themselves and fix the issue). Every device I own is working flawlessly with my wifi network besides my iphone 7 after IOS 11.4 update, therefore I know for a fact this is the issue, I don't need to buy a new phone.

I did the network and all setting reset, then shut off my phone and it would work for a couple hours; until I’d have to redo the process again and again the first few days. But then that process stopped working, completely. I finally have had my iPhone 7 back to normal today since the new IOS 11.4 update. Long long story short, what fixed it for me (for 24hrs now) was by backing my phone up to my Mac, (since I didn’t have WiFi I couldn’t do it with iCloud), then restoring it to a “new phone,” then plugged it in to my Mac again and did the backup restore. And my phone is finally normal again! I’m sooo happy!! I just hope it lasts, but I’m very hopeful! :)
