iOS 11.4 WiFi Problems

iOS 11.4 on iPhone 6 and iPad Pro. WiFi drops on iPad and then does not reconnect until numerous attempts, turning WiFi on/off, connecting to different network, or powering iPad on/off. Phone has no problem nor do my many Windows computers nor do my SmartTVs. It’s not my router or signal strength. Is this an iPad Pro chipset problem? Also, I have WiFi Networking turned off under Privacy setting for both phone and iPad

Same issue here - I have the following four iOS devices in use, all running on 11.4:

iPad Air 2 128GB: Badly affected by WiFi drops and reconnect problems

iPhone 6 16GB: Occasionally affected by WiFi drops and reconnect problems

iPhone 7 128GB: Not affected

iPad Pro 256GB: Not affected

The WiFi reconnect problems occured after upgrading to iOS 11.4!

The interesting thing is, that on the first two devices, the connection drops after about 10 seconds despite having connected succesfully. This can also be seen in the log of the router. The devices usually reconnect after roughly a minute and then stay connected until you go into screen saver mode or turn off the device.

Another problem that appears on all 4 devices since upgrading to 11.x, is the fact that the devices drop their WiFi connections a few seconds after the screen lock becomes active. This means that unless you have a mobile data connection, push mails and instant messages are being received with a huge delay. I have an old iPhone 5S that still runs on iOS 10.3 and that device is not affected by any of the above mentioned WiFi issues.

Agreed. It's nothing to do with your LAN equipment or cable plant. Everything else in the facility/house continues to work without issue. My iPhone X isn't affected. My iPad Mini 4 *is* the only thing affected and it didn't happen until the last OS update. People were reporting this issue with previous updates but none of my equipment was affected. Since it's not affecting 100% of a sub-domain of users within the whole, then that is harder to trouble shoot and resolve for the programmers. That the problem is expanding is an additional concern.

There's clearly a problem in the code.

I THINK I MAY HAVE FOUND THE PROBLEM.....

i belueve it’s a DNS issue. Poking around the manual network setup on my iPad Air 2, I noticed DNS servers that according to IT websites are VERY buggy. Specifically, these are public DNS that belong to Spectrum and Verizon (there may be others too).

hereks my solution which has been working all day...

1) goto settings, then wifi

2) find your network, click on the ‘i’ for info

3) goto CONFIGURE DNS, then click MANUAL

4) DELETE EVERYTHING EXCEPT 192.168.1.1 (that’s YOUR router)

5) add the following two DNS, 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. Those are GOOGLE public DNS.

6) HARD RESET your iPad/iPhone

this has now been working for me for hours, network comes back even after a complete power off situation.

Thanks. That makes the most sense so far. I've made those changes. We'll see how it goes.

As another data point that supports this: Spectrum

G*d D@mned Spectrum has been a PIMA for the past 2 years or more. Most recently has been the past 2 weeks of outages and throttling while their last mile of infrastructure has been in constant (though intermittent) failure. While I was fighting with the iOS bug my internet service through Spectrum has been bouncing around from totally down, to 0.1 Mb/s up, to what I pay for 60Mb/s (and sometimes more but never for longer than an hour or two). Of the nearly 50 tech visits to my home they have never found it to be on my side of the demarc yet they insist that it's on my end and want me to disrupt my days waiting for them to prove to themselves that it's them (it's always them). My first 2 years with Charter were a honeymoon of great customer service and service quality... then Spectrum started sniffing around like Charter was in heat. One month I had more than 100 hours of total outage (and got comped all of $10 on my bill).

It could be worse though... which is why I left AT&T to move to Charter in the first place. Ugh... AT&T... ammiright? The options for anything near the speed that Spectrum offers are non-existent here but I think I'll start shopping for microwave (line-of-sight) services. Storms might impact connectivity but that whole "last mile" (with neighborhood mux boxes and their seasonal change-averse cards that always fail as we move into the worst of the winter and the 100º days of summer) would be a thing of the past.

Couple other things....

1) after the steps I described, make sure you return DNS to Automatic.

2) NEXT, if you have access to a MAC, hold Option and click the WiFi symbol in the menu bar, click on WiFi diagnostics

3) ignore the wizard, click WINDOWS, then SCAN

4) you’ll then be told best channel for 2.4 and 5 ghz

5) setbyour router for those channels AND, for 2.4 select bandwidth of 20, fir 5 ghz select 20 & 4.

all of this helps, but it doesn’t solve the entire issue.

I also have this issue with my iPhone SE. Whenever I leave the house and come back, wifi does not seem to connect. When I dive in to the settings, it says connected but no internet and I see the 4G symbol. I'm the only one on 11.4 and all other devices (Apple iPhone 4s, 5C, iPad 2, iPad Mini 2, Samsung tablet, Surface Pro 4 and HP Windows 10 notebook) work fine. Besides that, I only have the issues at home. My WiFi stays on all day at work, without any issues.

I tried 11.4.1 trough public beta, but the issue persists. I now hope that iOS 12 fixes the issue, so I guess I will try the next public beta.

When I updated to 11.4 the first time (right after the launch) I saw this issue, so I reverted back to 11.3. Guess what? Problem solved. Few days later I woke up and the iPhone SE had decided to update that night. Same issue occured. Every time I come back from work, I have to reboot my iPhone. This is very annoying, to say the least.

I’m having a simular sort of issue. I have the IOS 11.4.1 Public Beta 2, I’ve been trying to download the Public Beta 3 for the past couple of days. I have the IPhone 7 Plus 128GB. My apps will update but whenever I open them nothing loads and it says no connection. I am currently having to use cellular. However I can’t do a software update because it will only let me do it on WiFi. I’ve tried restarting the phone, restarting the router and nothing seems to work. I don’t really know what to do

Same here with an iPhone 6S (with IOS 11.4). Wifi keeps dropping and when it is working it is very slow. I started using this iPhone 6S at June 1st and have now over 1,3 GB data usage. Normally I use less (because I am always using Wifi whenever I can) and was unware of Wifi droppings until Juni 18th. Hi Apple, where can I send the bill of extra data usage send to?
