I am facing same issue with sftp.
While looking for why sftp was failing with message "Received message too long", I found the solution:
The error happened coz I had print messages in my bashrc, somehow if there are print messages in bashrc, scp and sftp fails while ssh works fine.

I could not make scp work either, though in my case I do get authentication errors.
TBH, I have never used scp before. I use sftp daily without any problem, though.
I can only suggest you use sftp.

There is no issue in the syntax, and even the file(s) I am trying to copy do exist. It logs into the remote system to copy files but finishes the execution without copying the files. I know that remote system is being logged in as I can see messages from the corresponding .bashrc files.
I am glad you sorted it out.
