I have the little red notification on my App Store and it’s because the actual App Store needs to update. But whenever I try to it just spins for a second then doesnt actually update. I’ve tried logging out of my Apple ID and then turning the phone on and off and that doesn’t work. Not sure what else to do. It’s a brand new phone.
That is not the same thing as the App Store. You can find the Apple Store app on your device and delete it by lightly touching the icon until they all start to wiggle. Then click on the "X" in the upper left-hand corner to delete it.

No, they are not linked or related at all. You would never see an Update request for the App Store. What indicated to you that an update was needed? Not sure what you were seeing, but I can assure you that the stalled update was for the Apple Store.

Here’s the history:
(1) The “App Store” icon displayed a “1” encircled on its upper right hand corner.
(2) Opening “Updates” shows that an update awaits for “App Store.” No other apps; just this one!
(3) I click to initiate the update; the progress clock starts in motion, and when it completes, the “App Store” app reverts to inviting me to again “update” the app… this continues ad nauseam!
(4) When King_Penguin (above) informed me that another icon, “Apple Store,” likely existed on my iPhone, I searched, and indeed, it was found… but there was no indication that it required an update!
(5) However… following his advice, I deleted the “Apple Store” app… and, with that action, the “Updates” page no longer informed me that the “App Store” app required updating!
Believe it or not! 😟
It is not a matter of whether we believe you, it is a matter of how updates work. The App Store never has an update that you would apply. If it is updated, that is done as a part of an iOS update. There has never, in the history of Apple iOS devices, been an update sent to the device for the App Store itself. Believe it or not!

No, the App Store app was telling you that the Apple Store app had an update available for it - the App Store itself cannot get updates via itself. When you deleted the Apple Store app there was no longer any need to tell you that there was an update available for it as it was no longer on the phone, so it disappeared from the Updates tab.
Then... why wasn't the app that required updating identified! No other app was identified... and It certainly wasn't the "Apple Store" app? This was a fluke (albeit, minor). NB: Many others experienced this quirk!

Since it wouldn't update, and you had to ultimately delete the app, that was undoubtedly the cause of the problem to begin with. It thought there was an update to be done to it, but it was not updating, and it appears that no update was showing in the App Store for it. Did you check the updated apps to see if it showed there? Bottom line, there was an issue, so the behavior was unexpected and not ordinary. But it was related to the Apple Store app, not the App Store itself.

I had the same problem. The phone indicated 4 native apps needed updating, but they wouldn't clear. I would click on "update all", but it would halt. The update button next to each app also stopped midstream. Try this: enable icloud automatic backup and cellular data. Then be sure you have enabled automatic updates. This cleared the issue for me.
I tried lots of suggestions, including updating to the newest iOS and not only turning on location services but making sure it was enabled specifically for the App Store. Nothing worked. The environment was a new iPad for which I had downloaded one app, but 6 of the pre-installed apps were stuck, not installing despite updates being offered.
What worked was opening one of the 6 apps and then closing it. Then updating worked for all 6.
This bug may specifically affect people setting up new devices.
Thank you to the person that posted that this update has to happen in the “apple store” app - which is separate from the “app Store”. Not sure why it doesn’t update as ALL other apps do. Leave the App Store and look for the Apple Store - it has a shopping bag type icon....and once you open that you will be able to update in there. Thank you to the person that posted that info!
Thanks so much! I was trying many things to try to fix this, and not only had the Apple Store app not updating but some other apps, like garage band and others, when I did as you indicated going into the app itself and clicking update there, I was allowed to update all the pending ones.
Same issue here on an iPad. You cannot delete the app.
Yes it does not have the option. Not sure how I can clearer. See all the other little x option not this one
