My screen is locked by a virus and I cant tun it off

so I tried to download a video from instagram on an app called documents. I got a pop up on the app from scammers that listed a number claiming to be Apple tech support which I know is false. I tried to turn my phone off to see if the virus would go away and I am unable to. the screen is locked and I am unable to use my phone. all that works is the volume, power, silence and home button but I'm unable to turn my phone off. please help.

It isn't a virus.

Double tap the Home button then swipe upwards on the preview of the App you were using when this bogus message appeared. If it was Safari that generated this message, also go to Settings - Safari - Clear History.

Avoid sites that are involved in such bogus activities.

Press the keys to turn off your phone. Just wait awhile longer than normal because the Internet connection from that dialog is still open, and iOS just needs a longer than normal period to power down — until that connection times out.

At least, I am hoping that is the case. 😉

so I've tried that and the power button doesn't turn the phone off. the screen remains on a timer and its as if I never tried to turn it off. My phone still has the virus and I'm hoping that my phone will die and then I can open it and delete the app quickly before the internet reconnects.
