HomePod Stereo Pairing Not Working

I've followed Apple's instructions exactly (multiple times). Performed a hardware reset on both HomePods, tried again (and again). The HomePods appear as a stereo pair in the Home application on my iPhone, but don't operate as a stereo pair (only one outputs sound). Has anyone else experienced a similar issue and, if so, how did you resolve it?

A similar thing happened to me today (just bought a second Homepod). I see you have stereo pairing showing in your Home app so your experience is not the same as mine.

For others, make sure both Homepods have the latest OS update that supports Airplay2 (use Home app on your iOS device to manually do this if it hasn't happened automatically). The iPhone seemed best for this, compared with an iPad. The sound is brilliant but it only currently works from an Apple TV or iOS device - not a Mac!

It is handy that Siri on the Homepod is able to control playback from my iPad ("pause", play next" etc).
