Printers not recognized, slow Adobe Illustrator since Security Update 2018-003 Sierra

I installed the latest security update Monday and since then, all of my printers disappeared from system preferences and trying to add 2 of them back in fails with the error message: "An error occurred while trying to add the selected device. Bad file descriptor"


I've also been experiencing crazy slow launch, opening files and saving files in Adobe Illustrator. None of the other Adobe Creative Suite apps are having this issue. I use Illustrator 95% of the time and can't find a solution in Adobe forums, but since this happened after the security update and the printers are missing, it makes more sense that that's the culprit.


I'm running a MacBook Pro mid 2015, OS 10.12.6 and have copied the EtreCheck info below if that helps.

You have so much 3rd party software running, it is hard to tell what might be causing the problems. Try quitting everything and see if Illustrator works any better.


If you haven't done so already, try resetting the printing system.

"all of my printers disappeared from system preferences and trying to add 2 of them back in fails with the error message: "An error occurred while trying to add the selected device. Bad file descriptor"


I've also been experiencing crazy slow launch, opening files and saving files in Adobe Illustrator. None of the other Adobe Creative Suite apps are having this issue. I use Illustrator 95% of the time and can't find a solution in Adobe forums, but since this happened after the security update and the printers are missing, it makes more sense that that's the culprit."

Uninstall the Intego anti virus software.


Third party so called anti virus software is not necessary on a Mac. It's invasive and can cause the issues you are describing regardless of the latest security update. Your Mac has built in security.


The soundflower driver has caused a multitude of Mac users problems. Uninstall that as well.

Thank you, I uninstalled Intego but it did not help. I attempted to uninstall soundflower after finding a how to video but I don't think I fully succeeded after running their uninstall script? It still shows up in the Apple sound menu in Finder. My problems are not solved. When opening the Printers & Scanner preference pane, it takes forever to open and still shows no printers installed and Adobe Illustrator still opens and saves extremely slowly. I'm at my wits end... I need to work and I can't. I've copied another Etre check in hopes that it will help? Thank you for your time.

Thank you. Only using Illustrator doesn't resolve the problem. Each time I attempt to open Printers & Scanners to reset the printing system, it gives me the spinning beachball for several minutes and then a dialog box opens that says: "Preferences Error Could not load Printers & Scanners preference pane." I've restarted for the umpteenth time and it still does the same.

Can you uninstall/reinstall Illustrator?


Might be a corrupt .plist.


Do a backup, preferably 2 backups on 2 separate drives.


Quit System Preferences.


Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.


Restart the computer, open the application, and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.


If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.
