The only music I’m able to play from my watch that is on my iPhone X is music I have purchased through iTunes. When attempting to play any other music it either plays a random song or doesn’t play anything at all. Then when I look at my iPhone it says not playing.
This just in within the hour. Apple update for the iPhone to 11.4.1 fixed the issue. I have NOT updated my AW yet. Issue was a bug in IOS 11.4.

Thanks ambroze72. My iPhone was on 11.4 and it was frustrating the **** out of me that the albums on my iPhone were showing up on my AW but they just refused to play when I selected them on the watch. I think randomly, one album played so it frazzled me even more!
Just did an update on my phone to 11.4.1 and all is good again!
(My Apple Watch is still on 4.3 and I haven't updated it but as you've said, the problem was on the iOS and not Watch OS)
My non-iStore songs/cds are playing on my iPhone via the watch again. On a whim I signed up for the 3-month Apple Music trial and that seems to have done it. Before the trial my album covers showed up as the grey default icon on my phone but now that the trial is enabled they seem to display their proper covers in the music app.
I do not know if things will revert if were to cancel the subscription but for now I seem to have gotten past this issue.

Same problem here with my Watch and with my gf's. It worked fine with watchOS 4.3.1 and iOS 11.3, but it got messed up with the iOS 11.4 update. That iOS introduce changes on AirPlay, so it must be a bug.

Can you browse to the playlists (of ripped CD's) shared with your AW on your AW? What happens once you play an Album on the iPhone and see it in the "now playing" on your AW? Can you then select, play, pause songs from that album on the AW?
I contacted Apple and spoke with a senior advisor after an hr of screen sharing and trying everything suggested I still have the problem. She mentioned it could be intentional and have to do with only playing music that is verified to be legitimately obtained. She acted like it wasn’t a bug even though I mentioned not everyone is affected. She said having an Apple Music subscription may solve the issue since you can download music with Apple Music but that was the only solution she offered.
On Watch.. Music App --> "On iPhone" --> "Albums" not Siri. all albums/songs on iPhone are listed.
Before 4.3.1 I could then select any album and it would play. Now it seem only the one "Purchased through iTunes" album will play. All others just stall out and the Music App on the Watch goes into pause mode. If I then click Play it will just shuffle songs from the phone.
I have had quite and extensive back and forth with Apple Support about this today trying to figure out what the problem may be. They had no solutions for me but were taking it to the engineers I was told 🙂 . I have since added the info above to the case number.
and no music subscription.. Just my own albums (CDs and otherwise) I have uploaded to the phone.
Everything worked as expected in 4.3

For debugging, spell out the details of the behavior you see. When you launch the Music Player on the watch and swipe down to see you library, what happens next?
I just wanted to add that I have now purchased an album through iTunes Store to test this and it plays fine on my iPhone when started via the Watch. No other albums in the iPhone library will. All the rest where not purchased through iTunes but are CD rips from CDs I own or digitized versions of records from my collection.
I hope this new behaviour is not intentional and that it will be corrected in an update quickly.

I have no problems selecting, playing or controlling ripped music on the iPhone from the Apple Watch music app or player app.
The only time I’ve seen the “random play behavior” is when Siri can’t decide what was requested.
The only way I’m able to get my watch to play any ripped music on my phone is using Siri and still it won’t play a specific song, it will play a random song from the same album as what I requested. I have tried unpairing my watch that didn’t solve
I tried to use Siri from my watch and even that way of playing music on my iPhone is iffy using that route.
I told Siri to play a specific band and song and I was happy to see my iPhone start to play, but although the band was correct, the song was a random one from that same band.
Of course when I tell Siri on my phone to play a band and song, all turns out to be working just fine.
The problem does not exists while browsing music stored in the AW itself. It only happens when browsing music stored in the iPhone from the Watch.
Same problem here. Any situation trying to control ripped music in playlists, artist or album. If I choose the first music in songs works ok, but if I try another song the first one will play.
I have updated my iPhone 8 Plus and AW 3 with the new software for both, and once again my AW 3 controls the music from my iPhone to my happiness :-)
