Case blocking mic on iPhone 8, 8Plus, & X
Not exactly a question, but a fix/solution for people with this issue. (Had to post a new "question" since all relevant discussions are closed to replies.)
iPhone 8, 8Plus, and X are all waterproof, so having a waterproof case is basically double duty. There are people in situations where double-duty would probably be a big bonus, but the majority of us are happy that accidentally dropping it in the toilet should be no big deal; even if there's no case on it.
Disclaimer: You are not doing anything to your phone; ONLY the case.
This will void your warranty on any case you're using; however, it is a viable fix for the case blocking the microphone and muffling the sound. (It's also how to get an iPhone 7 case to work with your newer mic.)
Voice Call & Speakerphone Mic
- Open Voice Memos and make a "Testing 1,2,3" recording. Listen to it so you can hear how muffled you are.
- Take your case off and do the test again to hear the difference. (If there's no difference, chances are you need a mic repair.)
- look at your phone. The mic for phone calls, and speaker phone, is the second hole from the left on the bottom. See here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203792
- Look at your case, and locate that area on the case. Depending on your case, this may be covered by any thickness of plastic, rubber, etc. The key here is to poke, drill, or otherwise, make a tiny hole in the area that covers your microphone. (When I say "tiny," I mean something around straight pin size.) You want to make sure that you puncture only the case area that covers the mic.
(If it's thick plastic, I'd advise using a very small drill bit, and only drilling a single hole. Go gently, and don't push; you don't want to crack it, just add a hole. If it's thin plastic, a needle or safety pin should do the trick. I put a row of pin holes across the mic area on my case.) - Put the case back on and record another Voice Memo test. You should hear a big difference between the new, and first recordings. It may not be as good as without the case, but it should be much better than before.
Video Mic*
If your problem is the back mic that's used for taking videos, then you would open the case and poke, drill, or otherwise, make a tiny hole in the area that covers your back microphone. (Please refer to the link above to accurately locate that mic.)
*On a Lifeproof case, if you push on the plastic that's covering the hole, from the outside of the case, the little piece of plastic should just pop out; it does't take much force. (Yes, you could drill it if you want to, but it's too thick to just poke a hole through.)
The only drawback to actually putting openings in your case, is that some dust and dirt is bound to get in at some point. I would recommend opening the case on occasion and gently cleaning out any accumulated debris.
