If steps posted above don't work, try it in Safe Mode.

You will have t do this after starting up in Safe Mode to prevent adware

from interfering with the removal of adware .

1. Shut down the computer.

Press the power button. Immediately after you hear the startup sound,

press and hold the Shift key.

The Shift key should be pressed as soon as possible after startup,

but not before the startup sound.

Release the Shift key when you see the Apple logo on the screen.

Startup will take longer than usual.

Screen flickering is normal in Safe Mode.

Login to your account. Launch Safari.

Enter this address https://www.malwarebytes.org/antimalware/mac/

on the Safari address bar.

Download, Install , open, and run it by clicking “Scan” button to remove adware, if present.

Once done, quit MalwareBytes.

2. Reselect your search engine, reset homepage and disable all extensions and test.

1. Remove any Profile you have not installed knowingly.

Profiles

System Preferences > Profiles

Launch System Preferences. Do you see any profiles added to the pane at the bottom?

If you see Profiles listed, click on it.

When the Profiles pane opens, select the profile and click the “-“ button at the bottom left corner to remove it.

2. Safari > Preferences > Extensions

Select and uninstall all extensions you have not installed knowingly.

Section: Manage extensions: https://support.apple.com/guide/safari/use-safari-extensions-sfri32508/mac

3. Choose a search engine.

Delete all text in the Smart Search field, click the magnifying glass , then choose a search engine from the list.

4. Set your Home Page. https://support.apple.com/guide/safari/set-your-homepage-ibrw1020/mac

If this doesn’t help, please run EtreCheck and post the report here if you can .

https://etrecheck.com

Click “Free Download” button, open Downloads folder, click on it to open, and then select ”Open”.

Click on the bouncing EtreCheck icon in the Dock.

“Choose a problem” from the popup menu box, and then “Start EtreCheck” in the dialog.

Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” .

Paste it into the reply.

I finally got rid of the page loading every time. In my case, there was some form of bookmark in the safari bookmarks file that would trigger safari to load that page every time, even though Safari was set to load a different page.

I manually removed it with a text editor. The quick test would be:

Quit out of Safari.

Rename the file ~/Library/Safari/bookmarks.plist to something like bookmarks.plist.bak

Then re-launch safari. Your bookmarks will be reset, but it would be interesting to see if it stops going to Play Search Now.

Have you had any luck removing it? It is frustrating that so many posters are just using Google, posting links to sites that are as shady as the stuff we are trying to get rid of.

Malware Bytes does NOT detect it, in safe mode or otherwise. If you are just Googling for a solution, and the solution show pictures of generic adware infections, they don't help!

The Safari extension is "PlaySearchNow.safariextz". I find it rather scary that searching for that turns up nothing other than reports of it being installed on some macs. It doesn't return any pages with manual removal instructions.

It does not appear to be a crossrider variant (there are no profiles installed.)

The play safe now Safari extension was there initially, but after deleting it, it is still active. FF and Chrome also show no extension, but it is active in those browsers as well.

I did everything that was listed on all of the Apple forums. I've successfully removed it from Chrome and Firefox, but cannot remove it from Safari. I tried running Malwarebytes in safe mode and in non-safe mode. It says the homepage should be google.com and I have no extensions. I have deleted all of my browser history, I've deleted all of my extraneous apps and programs. Playsearchnow still comes up every time.

Yes, I have done all of these things. There are NO files in my LaunchAgents. There are no mysterious Apps. None of the files that these websites list are found on my computer. When I go to Activity Tracker, I'm not sure what things I'm supposed to Force Quit. It says to Force Quit "suspicious files" however, that doesn't mean anything to me. I can't find the ones they list. I have spent hours doing the things listed on these pages, but it does not work to remove the website from coming up when Safari starts. Is there a way to delete safari and reinstall?

I can't tell you how much I appreciate that you are responding to my comments, but I have tried everything that you have suggested and nothing has worked (well - they did work on Chrome and Firefox, just not Safari). The last link you provided - my Library doesn't even have those folders or those files. I am having no problem on Chrome and Firefox - just Safari.

I tried opening Safari with the Shift key held down. Nothing changes as if that doesn't even do anything. It's not listed as the page that should come up. My homepage is set to Google. I don't have any extensions.

I keep deleting the "Website Data" (see image below), and it keeps populating with PlaySearchNow and homesweeklies.com (the website that redirects to PlaySearchNow). Even though it says to block cookies, it still populates with those websites using my data.

Who do I take my computer to to have this remedied? Is it worth it? Do I just stop using Safari and not worry about it? It's so frustrating!
