You can go to System Preferences->Network and then depending on whether you are using a wired or wifi connection click on Ethernet or Wifi.
The IP address will appear there, or under Advanced.

Hi Phil thanks for your answer. I tried following your instructions but the result was a five digit IP address i.e. 12.1.1.1 (just an example, not the actual numbers.) I am chasing my MacBook IP address which is apparently much longer than that.

That is an IP address. IP addresses are made of up 4 sets of numbers that can go from 0 to 254.
12.1.1.1 is a valid and real IP address. Its an unusual one, but as valid as something like 192.168.1.23 is. Its jus in a different subnet.
What exactly are you looking for then if not that?
