How do I edit a template in Pages

How do I edit a template in Pages. From all I have been able to find it is "impossible" to "EDIT" a template in Pages. I am reverting to creating my own "Template folder" where I can do anything I want with the templates I create. Too bad Apple is slipping so bad. I don't know who designed their templates function, be he needs some training on what users expect.
