iPhone or iTunes just stops syncing

I have a laptop with very limited storage space, an iPhone 5s, and a PNY SSD external drive. My music is on the drive and not on the laptop because it just won’t fit. My issue is, when syncing, it will be in the middle of syncing and just flat out quit. It will say canceling and give no explination as to why it is cancelling? Could it be that the music goes from an exteranal to the laptop then to the phone? Is it that the laptop kind of *****? Maybe the USB ports?

iPhone 5s, iOS 9.3.1

Good afternoon vdubya22,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

I understand you are having some issues with syncing via USB with iTunes for Windows. There could be a number of reasons for the sync to stop including available storage space on the external drive, or possibly a corrupted file. Can you tell if the sync stops at the same point when you try to sync again? What version of the Windows operating system are you working with? If Windows 10, you may want to download the iTunes software from the Microsoft Store. Click on the link below for troubleshooting steps for iTunes and Windows software.
If you can't install or update iTunes for Windows
You could also try a different USB port on the next sync attempt.

Take care.
