Wifi icon BLANK-Can't turn on Wifi iMac

Icon blank upper right, open network prefs, try to click button to TURN WIFI ON, nothing happens.

Tried from Network Prefs Settings: Make Service Inactive (lower left gear setting), then deleting WiFi, unplugging Airport Express, replugging in, re-add in WIFI, still nothing works. (Think this possibly began after last OS update to 10.13.5 on 6/1, but not sure.User uploaded file)

Besides the antivirus problem, you may want to take a look into the very old kernel extensions (some dating as far back as 10.4).

One big indication that they are old is that they have installed inside /System/Library, which has been a forbidden location for a few versions of the OS.

/System/Library/Extensions

[Not Loaded] Soundflower.kext (1.6.6 - SDK 10.6)

[Loaded] ElmediaPlayer.kext (1.0 - SDK 10.4)

[Not Loaded] IOMissingSyncMassStorage.kext (6.0.4)

[Not Loaded] Missing Sync Classic Seize.kext (1.0.0)

[Not Loaded] HotSync Classic Seize.kext (3.2.1)

Soundflower is great and very useful, but there are more recent versions. I have 2.0b2 running fine, and hoping it will still work in Mojave.

Elmedia Player... I doubt this still works in recent versions of the OS. It was an interesting application back in the day, IIRC. The other ones I do not recognize, but seem to be related to old devices.

Jun 15, 2018 9:19 AM in response to Luis Sequeira1

Did SMC, no change. Here's EtreCheck report..re first part "two antivirus" ...the only second one I think is on my connected external drive where I do backups to, so it's prob in a backup. I don't remember any other? Re not having TM auto backups set, I have cal reminder to do once a week. Don't want to have on all the time.

A couple wks ago I called Frontier (my Internet server), and they said I couldn't be running both ethernet and wifi, which is weird, as I ran both in past without any problem. Anyway, making ethernet inactive didn't help re turning wifi on.

I deleted those remnant files and re-ran EtreCk and that finally has no more "major issues" nor antivirus showing-tks; end result still can't turn on Wifi. Do you think any of those "minor issues" would really make a diff re being able to turn on Wifi or not?

Guess will see what Genius bar ppl say next week-maybe hardware prob? Tks for all your, Luis, and Bob's help 'tho!

Luis, it didn't work. Couldn't turn it on when in Safe Mode, even after resetting NVRAM. I tried again while in SAFE in this order: (Network Prefs)Make service inactive(from gear menu), delete wifi, unplug airport express, wait few mins, replug AE, re-add WiFi, saw message: "Switching WiFi power will cause any unsaved changes to be lost. Would you like to apply your changes before switching WiFi power"...and had choice to "Don't Apply, Cancel, or Apply". A few days ago when this popped up I hit "APPLY", so tho't I'd try "Don't Apply", but message popped back again-it wouldn't let me NOT APPLY, so chose APPLY, and tried hitting TURN ON WIFI and nothing happens still when hit that button it won't turn on. (Note, I had Network Prefs ON, and tried to turn on from there, not from this pic of top menu bar.)

P.S. This newer iMac (2017) doesn't have startup sound, so during resetting NVRAM the only way I could tell something was happening, was by very minute changes in color of screen- when off was completely black, and during startup was such a dark blue could barely tell the difference in that and the black. I waited for 20sec as it says, so tried to notice it changing twice from black to blue and repeated, so I GUESS the NVRAM worked. I didn't see any difference in screen resolution, sound, date, etc after- same settings, which I tho't might be changed back to original settings.

[A second change from last iMac to this iMac is after putting into SLEEP, hitting any key on keyboard would awake, but no keyboard keys wake it, and now I have to quickly touch the on/off button on back of screen to bring out of sleep. I wondered if this means something else not right, or poss why NVRAM not show better that something is happening during?]

I forgot about those others, I tried making all inactive to see if wifi would appear but it didn't. I was going to add a pic of all turned off, but can't connect here when ethernet off. Now connected and hitting "use advanced editor" won't pop up that place to add a pic. Anyway, didn't help.

Found editor after closed reply above and hit EDIT. 🙂

Paraphrasing Oscar Wilde... 😊

"Having one antivirus may be construed as a misfortune, having two would look like carelessness"

Most third party "antivirus" programs are useless and detrimental to your mac's well being.

They tend to conflict with the normal working of the OS, without adding any real protection. Uninstall them both and check.

Malwarebytes seems to be the most benign of this lot, and it does not really brand itself as an "antivirus". It can be used to remove stuff like adware, but there is no point in having it run constantly.

There is certainly malware for the mac, but of the social engineering type. There are no know viruses that affect the mac in the wild.

If you don't fall for phising emails, and avoid dodgy websites, keep your mac up to date and do not disable its own security features, you have no need for installing these things.

Of some it can be said that they are malware themselves.
