On My 27" iMac I have a drive connected that I use for my Time Machine backups. I would like to use that drive for backing up my Mac Pro lap top. How can I use Time Machine on the Mac Pro to back up to my external drive connected to my iMac?

If I understand you correctly, you still want to use this external drive attached to your iMac for Time Machine, but now you also want to include Time Machine backups from your MacBook Pro ... correct?
If that's the case, then you will need to share this drive from the iMac so that Time Machine can "find it" and you an select it from the MacBook Pro.

Here are a few screenshots to help:
This first one is what Grant is referring to. You want to select the option "File Sharing" as you see below. You would then click on the plus "+" button under "Shared Folders" and select your iMac's external drive. You will also need to define which user or users can access this file share.
Then click on the Options... button. Be sure to select both the SMB & AFP options as you see in the image below.
Connect the drive to your MBP laptop. Configure the laptop to backup to it. This will result in the existing iMac backups to be erased. If you partition the drive then it can be used on either computer.
