**HDCP Errors iTunes\Safari fix**

Symptoms:

*You had to reset the PRAM on your Mac for whatever reason

*iTunes movies won't play. You either get a black playback window or an error related to HDCP.

*Hulu and Netflix movies won't play within the Safari browser.

*YouTube is unaffected by this.

*Hulu and Netflix still play within Chrome web browser.

*Windows 10 (VM nor Bootcamp) are unaffected by this bug

Fix (workaround):

*Boot into Recovery Mode on your Mac (command+R)

*Open terminal and type in the command EXACTLY as written:

nvram 8be4df61-93ca-11d2-aa0d-00e098032b8c:epid_provisioned=%01%00%00%00

and then press RETURN

It will go back to the prompt. Type reboot and RETURN.

Use this information at your own risk. If this sort of thing makes you uncomfortable, perhaps you should contact Apple support directly and have them walk you through this.

If you have to reset your PRAM again for any reason, this will have to be done again in order to restore functionality. Apple is aware of this and will likely provide some sort of update to perminantly fix this.

This is truly a workaround, not a fix. But it should provide you a fully functional Mac in the mean time

If this does not work for you. Please try this again and triple check what you have typed. This command is case sensitive and it will NOT throw up an error or success message to let you know the result.

Good luck and good day.

I have a ticket open for this issue as well. It started with my 2016 MBP...then I have seen it on a 2017 and two 2018s

Exact same symptoms as the rest of you and Engineering is bewildered by this.

I will add that Windows 10 is unaffected by this on the same hardware. Reinstalling everything from scratch with no third party software didn't fix it.

Thanks for this information. It worked for me on a 2017 iMac 4K. The fix survived all of the following situations:

- restart macOS

- shutdown iMac and boot into macOS

- boot into Boot Camp and then restart into macOS

I've been very stressed because I haven't been able to access over 400 movies and hundreds of TV shows for more than 2 months. I really appreciate you sharing this solution.

I've marked your post as "Helpful". I hope everyone with this problem sees it.

Thanks for posting this. Sadly, it has not worked for me. On my first try, I assumed all the "0"s were zeros. Terminal accepted the command, but the HDCP error persists. The next try, I assumed all the "O"s were the capital letter "O". Terminal accepted the command, but the HDCP error persists. I triple checked my typing each time. Is it a mix of zeros and capital letter O?

Hi Matt,

Thanks so much for this. I had the same problem with my wife's late 2016 13 inch MacBook Pro after a local Apple Dealer replaced the retina display. After a trip to the local Genius Bar and sending the machine to Apple for over a month, they were unable to fix the problem. Your nvram hack fixed the issue immediately. My wife is thrilled. We sent a link to your resolution to our Apple support rep.

Many thanks! I'd love to know how you figured this out :-)

Thank you Matt! This setting resolved the issue on my iMac 17,1. Wish I would have found this before spending 2 days on various combinations of installs, resets and restores! 😁

Would you happen to know if this rules out a hardware issue? I only noticed the problem several days after opening the iMac to upgrade from Fusion/HDD to pure SSD (and re-paste the heatsinks). I was worried that I might have damaged whatever magic hardware controls this HDCP business.

Matt! Thank you so much for this solution! You have no idea how much of a help you've been for me. I thought I would be forever screwed for my (2018 MacBook Pro) on playing iTunes(beats radio) and any html video on safari but your fix worked instantly for me. Even turning off and restarting the machine allows me to successfully play all videos and (beats radio iTunes). I have no idea how you thought of the fix but it was indeed really smart. Thanks again for making my day. I will make sure to never reset the nvram anymore because now that I remember that was exactly when the problem started happening.

Here is an easy way to solve it. (I solve it using this way). Play your itunes movie, when it shows black screen and stuck there, close your laptop screen, wait for it to go to sleep, then open the laptop wake it up again. You will notice it can playback again. I believe the problem is it mistakenly treat your internal screen to external screen, reset the screen will fix it.

MacBook Pro 13" Early 2011

High Sierra 10.13.6 / Safari 20.0.1 (all available updated are installed)

Thank you! Had all the same symptoms usually seen in Safari, but once tipped off that this was a copy protection thing, I also saw my iTunes purchased movies were black. Noticed this after the last High Sierra or general apple OS/Safari update which did include a few automated reboots and firmware flashing. Not sure if that caused the issue, or simply uncovered issue after flashing the firmware. Either way, I will be glad too see a permanent fix from Apple soon. That's my expectation. This was a bad bug.
