Family sharing trouble

Hi all,

I‘ve signed up for family sharing but when i go to invite my wife to apple music, before entering her details, it says:

“Your apple id is used by another family. Your itunes account (gregga@...co.za) is used by Gregg Abrahams’s family. You will not have access to their account for shared purchases or apple music until it is removed from gregg’s family.“

Thats me, gregg abrahams. This is a south african account.

So i have no idea how to get around this, as to my knowledge, ive never setup family sharing previously nor being invited to another family.

I also cant see where or how my account is setup, as itunes and the apple id manage section doesnt tell you anything, neither does family sharing on my iphone.

Your help is much appreciated.

Thanks

Gregg

Thanks Gail, thanks Eric.

I see now that family sharing is linked to iCloud and i was logged into iCloud with my US account and iTunes/App Store with my SA account. Signing in with SA account for icloud allowed me to invite my wife.

Now to see if i can go back to my US icloud account on the same device 🙂

Thanks again

Are you sharing the same Apple ID? If so, that is what is creating the problem. She needs her own Apple ID.

There may be some data loss, but you can minimize it. If syncing photos with iCloud, ensure Optimization is turned off in Settings/Your Name/iCloud/Photos and/or in Photos/Preferences/iCloud. Then make sure full resolution photos are on the device/computer. When signing out of iCloud, if asked whether you want to retain data, choose yes. Messages conversations will be lost if they are addressed to the ID. See the article below for other places that the old ID should be removed. Also set up Family Sharing to keep access to your apps. OK, so you are going to Settings>your name>Family Sharing on your device, and then tapping on "Add Family Member", correct? And it is when you tap on Add Family Member that you are getting the message?

Because you don't really invite someone to Apple Music per se. You invite them to Family Sharing, and if you have an Apple Music Family subscription, then once they are in the Family Sharing group, they have access to Apple Music:

Set up Family Sharing - Apple Support

If you log out of your Family Sharing iCloud account, and sign into your US one, you will no longer have any access to the Family Sharing data. If you want to use Family Sharing yourself, you have to be signed into the iCloud account that is set up for Family Sharing.
