macOS High Sierra Grey Login Background Issue

To whom this may concern at Apple Inc.,

Hi my name is Paul from Bangkok, Thailand & I require some assistance please.

Currently I just updated my MacBook Air 13-Inch Early 2015 to the recent OS "macOS High Sierra 10.13.5"

However, my login screen for my mac suddenly displays this grey background wallpaper instead of the blur transparent one like in my previous OS versions.

My questions to you guys is .. is there anyway to fix this issue?

Besides my login screen background being grey everything else is fine.

Regards,

Paul

MacBook Air, macOS High Sierra (10.13.5)

Are you the first user of the machine? If not, then the previous suggestion cannot work.

Here is another thing you can try.

The background for the login window is kept in

/Library/Caches/com.apple.desktop.admin.png

Try deleting that file:

In the Finder, press Command-Shift-G, type

/Library/Caches/

and press enter. Drag the com.apple.desktop.admin.png file to the trash.

You should have to enter your password.

Then restart your mac and see how it goes.

Since you are the only user, the id is 501. That is also confirmed by the fact that your background is used, blurred, in the login window.

Can I ask you to do another test?

Try restarting in Safe Mode, and see if the grey screen also happens when you wake your mac from sleep in Safe Mode.

If it works correctly while in Safe Mode, then the problem is caused by something that runs in your account when booted normally - a login item, launch agent or daemon.

In that case, please run the diagnostic tool Etrecheck, and post its report here so we can look for possible suspects.

Cleanmymac claims another victim.

Completely uninstall "cleanmymac" following the developers' instructions.

There is no way of knowing what damage this has caused already, so probably in the end

you should do a clean install of the OS, but for now uninstall this **** software and see how things go.

Another thing: you have parts but not all of the wacom software. There are launch agents but the necessary kernel extension is blocked (awaiting for your approval).

If you want to approve it, go to System Preferences->Security and Privacy->General, and click "Approve" next to the aforementioned extension.

Dear Luis Sequeira1,

I just deleted the "com.apple.desktop.admin.png" & restarted my Mac.

Upon restarting my Mac now the login screen background is not the blur transparent one which kinda of give a preview of my desktop wallpaper. Which is ok this part never had any issues.

However, upon going to Sleep mode & relogin into my Mac the login screen background on that part is still grey.

Dear Luis Sequeira1,

Regarding your first question the answer is NO!

I have been using MAC's for close to or more than a decade now.

I find your question a bit offensive, but I am going to let it slide 🙂

You misunderstood me.

What I meant to ask is if your account the first *user account* in your mac - the one with id number 501. It meant absolutely no disrespect.

The first account created gets number 501, and it is this account the determines the background image. So if there are two accounts on your mac, and yours is 502, my previous advice would not have worked.
