How do I configure the link speed of the adapter?

I want my Mac to work as fast as my PC where the PC adapter link speed is configurable and I get about 300 mbps on wifi and 1GB on ethernet, but I cannot find where to configure that on my Macbook (High Sierra) and so I am stuck well under 100 Mbps at best.

MacBook Air, macOS High Sierra (10.13.5)

Unless Microsoft has changed something, the link speed you see is the max theoretical speed supported by your hardware, not your actual speed. They may have some widget that shows the actual connection speed, but I don't know where it is.

To get close to GigaBit ethernet, you need a cat 6 cable that is fairly short.

Your Mac will auto-negotiate speed with the router. If your cable is insufficiently "clean" you will only get 100baseT vice 1000baseT because that is all the cable can support without significant errors.

Hold the option key and click on the wifi icon in the upper right menubar.

Here you can see your Network— and make changes. 2.4Ghz is slower but reaches further, 5GHz is faster but does not reach as far.

The Channel information will show you your connection speed to your router.

Dual band router will give you a choice 2.4 or 5GHz

Simultaneous Dual band router should automatically connect you to the fastest "most reliable" link speed.

  • While true that the 1 GB is theoretical, it is not the default and once configured, can be measured with third party tools to observe that I can get EASILY get several hundred Mbps of actual throughput as promised by my ISP.
  • And yes, I have the appropriate CAT7
  • And yes, I get several hundred (300+ Mbps) on Wifi (no CAT7 needed between my access point router and the PC.
  • You are missing the point though. I cannot find a way to configure the Macbook took get more than about 70 Mbps, whether this is a hardware or software limitation.
  • Windows starts with a low default and can be raised to take advantage of capable hardware. I see no such controls for the Mac link speed, whether for ether or wifi. Heck, my crappy iPhone6 can do 100 Mbps on the same network.
