Auto/Lock Not working under Guided Access

My 5yr old uses his 9.7" iPad (MP2J2LL/A) as an AAC speech device. It's in essence his voice because he is non verbal. We have his speech app under guided access so it is the only app installed on his ipad. After the last OS update, the auto sleep/lock function (which was working before we updated to the latest OS) has stopped working which is draining his battery and making it a challenge for his voice to last through the day. (with the auto sleep, a single charge would work 2-3 days). My son is unable to manually lock/sleep his device. All the settings are correct and have not changed. Is there a fix in the works? This is his voice after all. Please advise!

***I just tested before positing ... The auto/lock setting in display is set to 2minutes ... 20 minutes later , it has not gone to sleep.***

Tips for battery are great and all, but 2 months of no fix is pretty sad. You have to factor in the scenario of iPad's that are deployed in a business environment and are used for clocking in devices. These are mounted and put to use in guided access. Before the screen would shut off after the desired set inactivity time. Now all our iPad screens stay on 24/7. Battery is not the issue here since it's plugged in. The issue is 2 solid months of life being sucked out of my devices where the screen constantly stays on. I quicker fix would be nice is all I'm saying.

I'm having the exact same problem. My son is non verbal and uses his iPad as an AAC device. It's ridiculous that apple wasn't able to fix this problem. Very frustrating. This is HIS voice. And we cannot take out the guided access because then he will just surf the iPad. The battery is getting drained so fast that sometimes while we are out it's out of battery life!!! Ridiculous to wait until the next iOS update!!! Had they had a child with the same needs as ours, then I'm sure they would have fixed it in no time...

My understanding from Assistivewear (makers of Proloquo) this should be fixed with iOS 12 release. but definitely it has been poor response time. Moving forward I won't be updating OS's until I verify it works appropriately. Poor response time. It has been close to 5months since the bug creeped in on iOS 11.4 update. I have been very disapointed but nothing else I can do right now. Apple has us by the you know what on this. Very disappointed.

yes, tested with wall mounted ipad air and iphone 7. One connected to constant power, the other on battery only. In both cases after 15-20 mins, the screen goes dark. I used the calculator app for a test on the iphone and used a home automation app in the case of the wall mounted ipad.

Settings (on iphone): Display & Brightness->Auto-Lock 30 secs

Guided Access: On

Guided Access Options: Sleep/Wake button: On, Motion: On, Keyboards: On Touch: On, Time Limit: Off

Did this get fixed? Because in iOS 12 it looks like Apple broke the opposite of this that was working great in iOS 11. Guided Access with Auto-Lock set to "Never" will sleep and lock after just minutes every time now. Many devices and many users have noticed this as we use this feature widely. This is standard kiosk mode behavior which is totally broken if the iPad goes to sleep of course.

Since it sounds like the opposite of this issue, I wonder if fixing this broke that. (No reason both wouldn't work, but I could imagine breaking this accidentally fixing the other.)

This is driving me crazy! Our iPad has changed since yesterday's iOS12 update. Now the On/Off button does nothing when Guided Access is turned on. I have Auto-Lock set to 2 minutes. With Guided Access turned on, I just timed it: after 9 minutes + 30 secs., it dimmed and then 15 secs. later it went to sleep. Home button turns it back on.

But now that the On/Off button no longer works in Guided Access, we can't turn off the screen manually anymore. Why, Apple, why?? Why bother giving us a choice of Auto-Lock times if they are meaningless?

betiux, is yours going to sleep at all? Is your On/Off button working in Guided Access?

I have 14 iPads that I uses as 'kiosks' for user feedback at our company. These iPads stay on 24/7 in Guided Access mode. After the iOS 12 upgraded, all of the iPad screens go dark after 15 minutes of inactivity (even though I have the auto-lock set to 'never'). I rolled them back to iOS 11.4 and they're all working fine again. Sure seems like a bug in iOS12 to me.

Both 11 and 12 have bugs. It just so happens for your kiosk purposes, 11 works better. For those of us whose kids use the iPad as a communication device, 12 works better. We want the iPad to go to sleep to save battery life (and it didn't do that in iOS11). You don't want the iPad to go to sleep so iOS11 is better for you. If you have it set to "Never" in iOS12 and it still goes to sleep, well, then 12 clearly has bugs too. Different bugs, but both have problems. I'm glad you found a way to switch back. 🙂

Ping23,

iOS 11.3 had a good working sleep/lock feature. I have an iPad mini I never updated and it works well. If I can figure out how to go back to a previous iOS, I am going to do that. I got word back from engineering and according to them, the way it works in iOS 12 is the way it's supposed to work so it doesn't sound like they are fixing it. I submitted a feature request for the timer to work with Guided Access, but it is a new feature request... so not sure how long that would work. Pre iOS 11.4.5, the timer worked well and sleep locked around the 2minute mark. I am going that route. Not waiting on Apple to fix. Good Luck to you!

cheers!

Guided Access working with the Auto-Lock timer is not a Feature Request. It should be reported as a critical bug by as many people as possible through Apple Bug Reporting. This is something that has worked for many years since at least iOS 10 and there are no doubt tens of thousands of kiosk-style iOS devices in use that depend on the fact that Guided Access locks the current app and Auto-Lock set to Never makes the screen not go to sleep. This was just broken effectively 1 week ago by Apple, and needs to be fixed ASAP. This is a critical flaw for a great many users, and apps. I have reported the bug. Everyone should do the same.

Although I agree how you are categorizing this As a bug. If you read back on this discussion, the bug dates back to May of this year ( although it has previously shown up a couple years back ) ... not one week ago. I am only relaying what the engineering team working on this messaged accessibility support yesterday (who then called me with an update). According to engineering, their intent is for that feature not to work with guided access... Which is stupid in my opinion. What I am relaying to the discussion, is that engineering is no longer “fixing this“. So they are not viewing it as a bug anymore. The accessibility team suggested to request a new feature that includes those capabilities since engineering does not view that as a bug. They submitted the request yesterday and suggested others follow suit. So either way, it has been reported... voicing discontent is important, but a solution won’t happen over night since they are not actively working on this.

I think a trillion dollar company has a moral duty to fix this issue ASAP. Apple talks good on accessibility but action when things don’t work, or developing new accessibility features, it does not put its money where its mouth is. We are talking about people with often severe disabilities who don’t hsve a plan B, no other option, and they must be pulling their hair out over issues like this and many other accessibility issues. I know I am and being on the outside it is very hard to influence change and actions within Apple when thinsg aren’t working like this issue or if a new feature is needed. OS 12 and MacOS Mojave have been disappointing when it comes to new accessibility features and nowhere hear enough is being done when it comes to voice and accessibility. This should be a category of its own in accessibility, in my opinion.
