iPhone 7 Microphone Disabled and Headphones Not Working or being recognized

My iphone was working perfectly fine, has never had an issue, a major drop or anything. Updated my phone in the last week or so to 11.4. The other day I went to bed after calling a bunch of friends and talking on the phone... and when I woke up my phone no longer even recognizes it has a Mic. When making calls no one can hear you, and the speaker button is greyed out. The Voice memo button is also not even able to be pushed. It plays Sound for music and Youtube but not for calls. And it doesnt recognize plug in headphones, they just play over the speaker. Literally did nothing and all of a sudden my phone is a potato and it seems a lot of people have had this same issue.

It's obvious that Apple set a virus into the last update to ruin our older phones. Apple you are evil! My old phone had all my music on it and I was just using it as an device to listen to music since I couldn't transfer my personal music to my new phone (another evil). Your update disabled the microphone jack. Why is no one calling Apple out on this? How do they get away with this kind of behavior? It's obviously a purposeful virus tucked into the "update". We all trusted Apple and downloaded the update. I'm done with Apple products. The corporation has no conscience.

Hello braiden.c,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. It's my understanding that you've been experiencing multiple microphone and audio issues after recently updating your iPhone 7. I can definitely see how all of these issues could be very concerning. I'm happy to help.

If you haven't done so already, try restarting your iPhone. This step can resolve many unexpected behaviors.
Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If the issues persist, it's possible your content or software could be causing this behavior. I recommend backing up, restoring with iTunes, and setting up your iPhone as new. This will allow iTunes to remove all content and settings from your iPhone, along with installing the latest iOS version. Once the restore is complete set up the phone as new and test it without your content. Use the steps in the links below to back up and restore your iPhone:

How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings

If the issue persists after setting up as new, restore your backup.
Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup

Let us know the results.

Have an amazing day!

Hi Jeremy

I have the same problem.

Updated my phone to new software a few days ago. All going fine and no issues until yesterday.

I was in the middle of a call when I heard interference and then nothing. Hung up. Called back... I could not hear the person and they could not hear me.

I've done all the reboots and back up, started phone from new and still no difference.

Everything else is working perfectly.

I brought it into my local shop and their answer was to purchase a new phone.

It's only 18 months only and is perfect in every other way.

Is there anything else I can try?

Thanks in advance,

Teresa

Thanks for the reply Jeremy. Unfortunately these did not solve the issue and the problem still persists. By reading online it seems a lot of people are having this issue and nothing fixes it other than bringing it into Apple - They test it by doing some sort of test with the mic and it will read “trouble pairing to device” or something along those lines. But unfortunately it seems a good portion are being told to buy a new phone regardless even though it’s a software issue and Apple is aware of it, not all of Apple seems to be aware.

Hi Braiden.c

You are having the same problem as I and many others and Apple seem to be doing nothing to rectify or acknowledge this problem.

There is no way to get in contact with Apple directly by telephone or email unless your product is within warranty. This is an absolute joke. I have used Apple products for the last 25 years as have my husband, son and daughter and very disappointed that there is no service for a problem that their update has created.

I have posted here and have not received a reply.

I will be changing all Apple products for Android going forward and will ensure that all families members will do the same.

Please let me know if you get yours resolved in anyway.

Many thanks,

Teresa

This just happened to me exactly as you describe. One day my 18 month old Iphone 7 plus was working fine and then I upgraded to iOS 11.4.1 and suddenly the microphones went dead. Now I can't make or receive phone calls, but everything else works fine. I tried numerous resets, none of which fixed the problem. I then went to the local Apple authorized reseller to see if they could do anything. Their answer was that the phone would have to be replaced (at a significant cost) because the microphone was an internal component that they couldn't repair. I called Apple support hoping for an exception because the problem was (I think) caused by their software upgrade and if it wasn't the only other possibility is defective hardware. Their representative was, I have to say, very nice, professionally and I think was genuinely trying to help. I hadn't done a reset from iTunes because I had over 12 thousand songs which I didn't want to erase and frankly, based on the research I've done on this known and growing problem I was sure it wouldn't solve anything. But they insisted in order to rule out a software problem so the service centre did it for me. The problem did not go away. And Apple's response? They have refused to provide an exception. So, although this a known problem that has to be caused by either A) Buggy Apple software or B) Defective Apple hardware the company has decided that because the phone is off warranty the cost to repair/replace should fall on their customers, who have already paid a not insignificant price to buy their phones, in my case just over a year and a half ago. At various times I have purchased 3 iphones, at least 4 ipods and a Mac, not to mention various accessories to use with them. To say the least, I am very disappointed with Apple's reluctance to stand behind its products and do the right and obvious thing. Needless to say, I'll have to re-evaluate my loyalty to this company

The exact same problem happened to my iPhone 7 (2 weeks after the expiration of its warranty). Apple refused to provide any help/solution other than a replacement with a refabreshud phone for $402 + tax. The technician told me clearly that it's a common problem for iPhone 7 but Apple would not do anything except if the phone still under warranty!!! I was really disappointed!

I spent about an hour on the phone with Apple support today and the long and short of it is: they will not acknowledge that the issue is in any way a result of the update. The supervisor I spoke with said the "hardware issue" was probably pre-existing and that it wasn't fully realized until the update occurred. As a result, they will no longer make any exceptions. You either pay for repairs or get a nice pair of bluetooth headphones so you can make calls. Seriously considering Samsung right now.

Sorry to hear. Ya they admitted to me probably 15 times it was due to software and hardware. It really depends on who you talk to because I talked to about 3 different supervisor in total. 2 said they could replace it depending on if I said I was going to write this post bringing light to it all. 1 said he couldn’t but he wasn’t a helpful associate in any way. There are other articles even proving they admit that it’s software. I just can’t believe this is legal.

Yes that’s what they tried to tell me as well. I had to call and re call talking to different supervisors and getting very upset. I have no idea how this is legal. But after speaking with 3 managers, and 2 of them admitting it’s apples software, and have a technician also do the test to indeed it is apples software. They finally swapped it even though it’s out of warranty. It was close to 2 months of battling.

Aug 31, 2018 11:58 AM in response to braiden.c

The only things to do: call apple, hopefully talk to someone who actually wants to see and fix the problem, explain you’ve read countless articles of it being apples software, and that apples has released a statement admitting so as well and then explain the issue. they will screen share your phone to see it is indeed apples software. They must write on your case file that they will swap it. If they do not want to switch your phone or says it’s not covered. Ask to speak to a supervisor. If they don’t either, try hanging up and asking to speak to someone else. Then they will send you to either a technician who is approved by apple or their apple store and swap it if it’s written in you’re case file.

Hello. I recently had the exact same problem with my iPhone 7 after updating to the new iOS 11.3. My iPhone did not recognize its microphones in neither of my apps (camera, snapchat, instagram etc.) or with headphones. I read the replies at this page and feared the worst - that my iPhone was becoming useless. After trying to restart the device multiple times with no success i figured i´d have to call apple support. They did not have any answers to me, but he recognized the problem as a bug in the software and we figured that the best would be to try reseting the iPhone to fabric settings. If that wouldn't work, i would have to call again. So i tried to reset my device and the results were good. All of the microphones started working again and hopefully they will continue with doing so. You should try the same.

Hi Jeremy,

I’ve got the same issues, however this is after updating my iPhone 7 Plus to iOS 12 and iOS 12.1.

I’ve tried all of these options and the mic resumes normal functioning, but then the problem returns. Is apple aware that this software issue still exists? Should I just look forward to further updates that could possibly fix my iPhone, or just admit defeat.
