iPod Not Showing up in Windows Or iTunes

Everytime I connect my iPod to my computer it never shows up. I have restarted my computer, reinstalled itunes and have even looked for a update to restore my iPod. Nothing works. Im not clear on what the problem is. This iPod is new and has never gave me any problems until now. Why won't it show up when I connect it? My iPod is a 80Gb video. Thanks for any help given.

Here's a question. I have 4th generation (I think) 20gb ipod. No color screen. On Monday, I had one of those exclamation point folders pop up on my ipod screen. I reset it, and then the stupid thing deleted my songs. When I plugged it into my laptop, My Computer and itunes both did not recognize it. It also froze itunes and updated the songs back onto the ipod while not being recognized.

Tuesday, itunes let me restore the ipod, but still didn't recognize it. My Computer recognizes it though. I've done everything that the support section of this website has suggested. Yet this morning, when I plugged my brother's mini ipod into my laptop, not only did My Computer recognize it, so did itunes. itunes even asked if I wanted to download updated software for the mini and if I wanted to sync it with my songs. What's wrong with mine? Hardware maybe?

After spending days, and almost throwing my ipod out of the window, id got to the stage where I had had enough!
Anyway, on my last ditch attempt, I unplugged all my other stuff from the USB ports: printer; wireless mouse etc. Anyway, it worked. Figured that its something to do with my printer, its a multi-function. Dont know why, but it works anyway.

My iPod Nano doesn't show up in iTunes, though I can see it in Windows. I have gone through every suggested fix I can find on the apple website, including everything suggested on this discussion thread. Still not working. 😟

I think the problem is with a corrupted file on the iPod. The error message I get when I start the iPod device processing is "\iPod_Control\iTunes is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chksk utility." I ran Chkdsk and nothing came of it.

I'm at a loss and I miss using my iPod!! Can anyone help? Thanks!

I have read a lot of posts today about this problem, and NONE of the solutions helped. Noone has seemed ot mention this though... my ipod has this habit of "hurling" when i connect it to any computer. The hard drive will start "spinning up", then about 4 seconds after that i will hear a loud clicking sound. This repeats until i put it into disk mode or turn it off.

Hi all. Apologies if the solution has already been posted, but here's what I did from start to finish (including what went wrong) to get my ipod nano working after trying (and failing with) all of Apple's suggested fixes for the "iPod Not Showing up in Windows Or iTunes" problem:

1. I plugged my (2nd hand) 1st Gen, 2Gb ipod Nano into one of my Acer (Aspire 5630 - Windows XP Media Centre Edition, SP2) laptop's 4 USB 2.0 ports before installing anything from the CD. I had previously installed iTunes (v 1.7.1.5) and assumed that the ipod would be detected automatically. This was where my problem began.

2. My ipod wasn't detected by my PC (Unable to find driver for device/device malfunctioning error messages upon re-inserting the 3rd-party USB lead into a different USB port). It didn't appear in "My Computer" or itunes. The ipod didn't charge and there were no icons (sad computer, do not disconnect etc) displayed on the ipod screen; just the normal menu system.

3. I read all the topics (mentioned above) on the ipod help pages and tried them all, including a full re-install/roll-back of iTunes & the Last.fm plug-in which I had installed. I also reformatted my ipod (on another PC - see below) and upgraded it with the latest firmware (1.3.1). None of the suggestions worked.

4. I then installed the ipod successfully on another WinXP SP2 computer (Desktop, USB 1.1) using the disc supplied with the ipod (itunes 4) so I knew that it wasn't lead that was the problem as some of the above posts suggested. I also suspected that it wasn't the newer itunes software as was suggested above so I upgraded the successful install to itunes 1.7.1.5 and the ipod still worked!

5. I tried to copy across the itunes settings from the PC which had the successful install/upgrade to the faulty install PC but that didn't remedy the problem.

6. Next I found the Windows driver on the machine that had the successful install (USBSTOR in the C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers folder). It was the same driver as was being used on the faulty install PC.

7. I copied over the driver from the successful install PC to the faulty install PC (overwriting the original driver on the faulty install PC) then deleted the "Unknown Device" in the USB "Universal Serial Bus controllers" section of the faulty PC's Device Manager (you get to it by clicking on the "Device Manager" button in the "Hardware" tab of the "System" option in the "Control Panel" - Google it if you are confused). I then clicked the "Scan for Hardware Changes" button in the device Manager and, hey presto, the driver successfully installed and everything worked.

I realise that my description is a little rushed and I apologise for this.

Many thanks to the poster above who mentioned that the problem was due to a corruption in the driver.

I won't be checking back on this post so if you have any problems understanding what I did, I hope that another forumite will be able to interpret my ramblings and/or give you a working copy of the USBSTOR driver.

Hope this helps
Dan

Unfortunately I am once again perplexed!

After syncing the ipod with a playlist & disconnecting it, windows is back to installing it as an "unknown device". I've pointed it at the driver repeatedly but it is refusing to detect it. Incidentally, there is a much more concise step-by-step guide on how to fix the problem here:

OK AFTER DAYS AND DAYS TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHY MY COMPUTER AND ITUNES DOESN'T FIGURE OUT MY IPOD, I FOUND OUT WHAT THE PROBLEM IS GUYS. THE PROBLEM IS THAT YOU IPOD MAY HAVE A HARDWARE PROBLEM, VIRUS, OR SPYWARE. THAT HAPPENS IF USERS DOWNLOAD MOVIES AND MUSIC FROM "LIMEWIRE" POSSIBLE SPYWARE AND VIRUS MAY HAVE BEEN SYNCED TO YOUR IPOD. THE QUESTION IS IF THERE IS A WAY TO RESTORE YOUR IPOD TO FACTORY CONDITION, IF YOU COMPUTER RECOGNIZES IT...
