How do I send and receive text messages using iMessage on my Mac (not an iOS device) with a friend who does not use an iPhone?

I want to be able to send and receive text messages using my iMac with a friend who does not use an iPhone. How can I do that?

Sometimes I want to send and receive texts with more than one friend, but one of them has an iPhone and then other does not use an iPhone. How can I do that?

Thank you.

Do you also have an iPhone? If so, you can send messages from your Mac through the iPhone via Continuity. See the SMS/MMS message section of Use Continuity to connect your Mac, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple Watch - Apple Support
