WD mycloud with photos on iCloud

I would really appreciate some help with this. I've tried to put my problem as simply as I could. I hope I haven't been confusing.

Anyway, I’ve purchased a My Cloud 2TB so that I can get my photos from icloud onto it.

The reason I wish to do this, is that I would like to create a photobook via photobox or similar. Photobox doesn't work with icloud and you have to download the photos from icloud first to your mac before uploading them to photobox. I just don't have the room to do this, hence the reason why I have my photos in icloud to start with.

I have tried to upload my photo library from icloud. Firstly, there seems to be no way of telling how many photos have been uploaded. Given that, I tested for a certain photo to find and I can’t find it on the WD Mycloud but it’s still there on icloud. So I am guessing that about 2/3rds of my photos have been uploaded.

I have tried uploading from an Ipad and Iphone via the app. I then went on to try and upload just an album via the app. Only 18 photos of 78 were uploaded. I tried again and another few photos uploaded but not all of them.

Just for reference I’ve put everything into folders and set my auto-timer to never too.

If I try and upload from my Mac and select the folder I want from icloud photos, well I just get the little timer thing whirring around when I select the album I would like to upload. In fact I get that a lot, even when I try to access photos even for attaching to an email or putting on FaceBook. Sometimes, I can see the photos I want in an album, sometimes I can only see some of them but most of the time, I just get the timer thingy whiring around.

I am finding this extremely frustrating. Apologies but I still hope that someone can help me.

The MyCloud drive is Network Attached Storage with one or more 'shares' each appearing as a volume on the Desktop when accessed. The contents appear in the same way as any Finder window, so it looks and behaves just the same as an external hard disk, though a bit slower. (It can also be accessed over the internet if this is specifically set up.) Get Info describes its format as 'Appleshare'. I would assume that it wasn't formatted like a standard hard disk, but in a format that could be read by any device accessing it.

From this, and reading your link above, it would seem that trying to copy a Photos Library as it stands to the WD is not going to work. I would have thought it better, if more time consuming to extract the photos and copy them into a normal file structure. That works perfectly well (it's what I've done, though Photos or iPhoto were not involved.)

Ah. Well, if you have a folder with a very large number of items the Finder (which is what is being used to make the copy) can sometimes feel overwhelmed. That may be the issue. I should create an equivalent folder on the WD and copy the photos in reasonable batches - say 30 or if that works 50.

Thanks Roger.

I am trying that suggestion right now. Thank you! I am having to do it via the app on my ipad, as when I try and click the album I want from my macbook, I just get the timer thing whirring around.

So far, I have selected 30 photos as you suggested but it's been 5 minutes now and only 1 has uploaded.
