delete messages from archive mailbox

All mail goes to my archive, I have set, in Preferences, that deleted mail goes to trash, but it does not do so, it all goes to archive

Secondly I cannot delete any messages from the archive. I have used delete, and then used erase all deleted mail form all mailboxes . But the messages reappear

Hi Valerie,

Moving mails to Archive instead of Deletion is also dependent on the mail service provider settings.
I am not sure which service do you use, But I would cite the example of Gmail.
Go to settings > Forwarding and IMAP/POP

Here, Set Auto Expunge On. If it is Off, The next section opens up that sends the deleted emails to Archive by Default.
Otherwise Set Auto Expunge Off and hit the option for moving the message to Trash.
IF I am not wrong the server settings are overlapping your Apple MAil preferences.

Wish That helps,

Thank you
Lindel

You wrote - All mail goes to my archive, I have set, in Preferences, that deleted mail goes to trash, but it does not do so, it all goes to archive .

If you create rules in IMAP account preferences and move mails to archive they will follow it and will not go to trash see this screen shot .

And 'bout - Secondly I cannot delete any messages from the archive. I have used delete, and then used erase all deleted mail form all mailboxes . But the messages reappear .
