Files not showing in Recents or "Recent files"

Specs:

iMac

3.2 GHz Intel Core i5

16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

High Sierra 10.13.5

Office 365 subscription

Files that I have recently opened / modified / saved are not showing up in Finder "Recents" or in MS Office programs "Open Recent". Some random files do show up in those lists, but they are usually from a day or two before.

I've had this problem since May (roughly). I can't find other discussions regarding this issue. Please help!

iMac (27-inch, Late 2013), macOS High Sierra (10.13.5)

Office currently does not set the metadata required for items to appear in Recents.

Recents depends on kMDItemLastUsedDate being set. Finder should set that if you open the file in Finder. If you open it from within Office, or when you create it, the metadata is not set. Microsoft would need to update their software to write that data.

There are various Apple programs that also do not set the metadata.
