Mac Mail- cannot move mail into folders

I'm using Sierra 10.12.6 on my iMac. Problem with the MAIL app. I have been using it for years and I have numerous folders and subfolders under the "On my Mac" master folder. I have always been able to click on and drag an email in the Inbox and move it to a folder or subfolder. But of late when I move an email it disappears out of the Inbox but does not appear in the designated folder. I can only see it then in Archive.

This applies only to certain folders - some folders accept an email dragged to it. Others don't. Any new folder/mailbox I create will not accept a move. If I create a new folder or subfolder it also will not accept the move of an email. I though there may be a limit on folders but checking I should be well within the limit, nonetheless I have deleted a number that are no longer relevant. Account info tells me I have over 8GB available.

What is the reason for this? How to correct?

(I read an old post where someone had a similar issue - he noted that the mailbox/folder attribute was either 256 or 257. 257 did not permit "move 'to" while 256 did. I don't know how to identify the attribute nor change it, if that is relevant to the problem.)

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.4)

I updated IOS to High Sierra. This has resolved the issue I was having with Mail. In fact the various mails I had moved that previous were not visible in the destination folders are now visible.

Thanks anyway for your input.

Try rebuilding the mailbox(es).

Rebuild mailbox

try the Safe Mode.

Safe Mode - About

Safe Mode Startup – El Capitan. also Sierra

If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. Thanks Eric. I have followed your instructions. Te EtreCheck report is below. I havechecked to isue if the mail move issue has been resolved. Unfortunately it has not.

I'm thinking that I should upgrade to High Sierra and see if that reolves the issue.

Any thoughts/suggestions anyone?

Sometimes it is a temporary state in Apple Mail. Quit the mail application and relaunch, the ability to move mails to the desired folders is restored.

As a general comment, there seem to be lack of attention to detail in Apple OS releases: the quality is generally good but defects creep in functionality -- updating of preferences that take an app restart to occur (e.g., changing fonts in Mail), fonts that "disappear" from Apple's Font Book and Font controls, etc.
