The sidebar (Bookmarks, Reading List) is there every time I open a new window in Safari. How to prevent this?

Every time I open a new Safari window, it opens with the sidebar present. I know how to close this sidebar (⇧⌘L), but what I want is a setting so that it isn't there in the first place when I open a new window. Is there a way to enforce this?

When I see that happen, it is because the last window I closed had the Sidebar open when I closed it. Try to make sure the Sidebar is closed, close the window, then open a new window and see what happens.
