Thunderbolt Display to non-Apple Thunderbolt 3

I have a Thinkpad that has a Thunderbolt 3 (usb-c) port and it has the little thunderbolt lightning bolt on the port. I tried using the apple adapter below and the Thunderbolt software on Windows 10 does recognize the monitor but I get no display. What I need to know is if this is even possible. Can a non-Apple laptop with Thunderbolt 3 talk to an Apple Thunderbolt monitor? If not, then I need to do something else...

Apple says the display is Mac only, but some people have reported it working with Windows computers that have Thunderbolt ports. (Daisy-chaining two displays doesn't work.) Apple has no control over Windows software or hardware, so don't want to claim any compatibility that may later fail due the Windows changes.

The same applies to the Apple adapter. It might work but Apple won't say.

Startech sells one that does work with Windows laptops.

It says you may need to update the laptop.

Here is a report that mentions a Thunderbolt display working in Windows via a Thunderbolt-3 adapter.
