Mac OS X 10.13.6 Killed my Ethernet Connection

I just successfully downloaded and installed the 10.13.6 update and immediately following the reboot of my iMac Pro, my Ethernet connection is no longer functioning. If I manually pull the ethernet cable out of the back of the computer and connect using either WiFi 5G or 2.4G, I get connected to the Internet. Has anyone else had this problem? I've restarted my Asus router and DrayTek Vigor 130 modem twice, but to no avail. My wife's MacBook Air, which is still running 10.13.5, is connected to Ethernet via the Display Ethernet (to the same Asus router) and is running fine. Help! I can get by using the 5G WiFi but would obviously like to be able to use my ethernet connection as my main one.

Strangely, during the first Support phone section, Ethernet connection worked while we were in a Recovery mode and launched Safari. I guess that proves that the Ethernet port hardware itself is working.

Yes, and it suggests that probably some of the software running is causing a conflict.

A few things to try:

- recheck all the settings in System Preferences->Network

- login to a new user account, and check if Ethernet is working correctly there

- start in Safe Mode, login to your normal account, see if it is working

- run Etrecheck from your normal user account and post its report here

Very strange!!

I have researched back over many posts in this forum, and came across a reference in a 2012 post under a heading of "Mac Mini crash log" to checking out whether an Xrite S/W file was upto date with the current OS.

I checked back through my old applications and found a folder relating to some old Xrite files.

With nothing to lose I deleted these files.

Lo and behold, my problems reported above, which appeared after updating to 10.13.6, have disappeared.

My system once again has very quick response, and maintains continuity on internet connection.

I can only assume that somehow these old files affected the updated OS.

If you enter "Xrite S/W" into the search box that will bring up the general list of issues associated with Xrite updates and Mac O/S.

Start with the entryRe: Mac Mini console crash log: what's it all about-Alphie? on page 1, and read on.

I just felt that somewhere along the way it was worth following this issue.

I used to have an Eye One some years ago but then Xrite didn't update the software for the model that I had but marketed a new model instead. At that point I abandoned Xrite as taking the P....!

As I was left with some old Xrite software residing in my iMac I felt that I had nothing to lose by uninstalling it.

Hey Bingo! - result

Well worth trying if you are in a similar situation

Good luck

About the macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 Update - Apple Support

After the restart my wired internet (USB C with ethernet adapter) doesn't work at all.

What do you see in System Preferences->Network? Does it show there?

Does it have a green dot? yellow? red?

How is it set? DHCP? Manual? Post screenshots, if possible.

If it does not show in System Preferences, can you add it? Clicking the + button at the bottom left, what are your options?

Thanks. I used much more sophisticated and complicated methods to find it--which didn't work at all!!! KISS is a good acronym most of the time--I wish I'd thought of it.

I've been on to Apple Support since my machine is still under warranty/Apple Support. The tech and I determined that the ethernet port/hardware on the iMac is working but it is still not connecting, even after going through Reinstall from Internet in Recovery mode. I'm downloading the combo as I write this, and will try that before calling back to Apple Support. Maybe I'll get lucky. I also note that I'm not the only person having troubled with internet connectivity.

Can someone please point me to the location of the combo update. I've been searching and searching to no avail. The latest full version of High Sierra on the App Store is 10.13.5. Frustrating. I did try downloading the Update and running it again, but Ethernet is still not working on my iMac Pro. My wife's un-updated MacBook Air continues to connect via ethernet to the router just fine.

I have a very similar problem. I am using 10.13.6 (including latest updates) on a 2011 iMac.

I have the green lights showing on both my ethernet link and also my wi-fi link,....... but intermittent internet connection.

In fact every few minutes it drops for 10 minutes and then returns, repeatedly. This happens whether it is the ethernet link or the wi-fi link in use.

My iPad, which has wi-fi only, has no interruptions to the internet and enjoys continuous supply of wi-fi from the same router.

I have had my ISP provider check the line to the router, which was fine. I have changed ports on the router, no difference.

I have switched off the router, and reset, .. no difference

I have switched off and unplugged my iMac, and done a soft boot,. no difference.

I have done a full start to the iMac...no difference

I have done all of this sequentially, as advised in the forums.

I have done a full system virus check...no issues.

I've run out of ideas with my limited technical knowledge.

Any other suggestions would be very welcome.

So, if my iPad is OK on wi-fi, then it seems to point to the iMac or it's software as the problem.

I have spoken to a local Apple systems guy who says it is unlikely to be hardware, and that it points to being a software issue. It appears that if it is going to be a lengthy and costly affair to employ a someone to look at it, that I may as well look at getting a new machine.
