What does it mean when I turn on my MacBook and it shows a globe with an exclamation mark in the middle?

I’ve tried to reset my Mac book to its original factory settings which I think was successful. I followed a tutorial on youtube that explained how to do so and it was all going well until I tried to update the OS X and it was taking over an hour to download so I quit the download and forced shut down the Mac book

I though I did the right thing but quitting the download before turning it off but when I turned it back on a folder with a question mark appeared.

I turned it back off then on again holding down the command and r button then a spinning globe showed up on the screen.

After awhile a triangle with an exclamation mark showed up inside the globe icon.

I’m worried I’ve destroyed the start up disc somehow,

If so how much will it cost to repair 😳

Check this:

...

Newer Mac computers and some older Mac computers automatically try to start up from macOS Recovery over the Internet when unable to start up from the built-in recovery system. When that happens, you see a spinning globe instead of an Apple logo during startup. To manually start up from macOS Recovery over the Internet, hold down Option-Command-R or Shift-Option-Command-R at startup.

If you still can't start up from macOS Recovery, and you have a Mac that is able to start up completely, you might be able to create an external Mac startup disk to start up from instead.
