Trying to replace my SCSI HD or Replace with an ATA in my B&W G3

Hi all,

I've been trying to add new HD's to my B&W 400mhz G3. When I was given the Computer it had 2 68pin 9GB SCSI HD's (which are still in it) I Bought an Maxtor 7200 RPM Ultra ATA/133 200GB & 100GB HD's. I've installed the 100GB but it wouldn't boot up. I tried using the Mac OS 9 disk to format it as well. And nothing. I did a lil more research and found that I might need an Ultra ATA PCI Card. I bought a Sonnet 133 ATA PCI Card. I installed the Firmware and card. And still no go. What am I doing wrong? I'm ready to buy a 50GB SCSI HD. I want to use my Mac for my iPod, surf the internet, Recording Music and to do Graphics. I also would like to use both Drives, one for OS 10 and the other Mac OS 9.

Cheers!

Hi,

The drive is connected to card with the cable supplied with the (Maxtor) HD and connected in IDE 1 slot. And I still have one 9GB SCSI running as the master. I tried disconnecting the SCSI completely and pulling out the SCSI card and only running the ATA as master with Sonnet Card (Still mounted in the 3rd spot in Hard drive tray). My board is also a Rev 1. I know these have problems reading large drives. My Sonnet ATA 133 card reads as SCSI and not ATA on Apple System Profiler. I am also running Mac OS 9.2.2
Maybe my Sonnet card is not compatible? The sticker on my Sonnet card reads (Tempo ATA 133 V4.5)

Cheers!

"My Sonnet ATA 133 card reads as SCSI and not ATA on Apple System Profiler"

That's OK, some cards are designed to do that for technical reasons.

"The drive is connected to card with the cable supplied with the (Maxtor) HD and connected in IDE 1 slot. And I still have one 9GB SCSI running as the master. I tried disconnecting the SCSI completely and pulling out the SCSI card and only running the ATA as master with Sonnet Card"

How are the IDE ports on the Sonnet card numbered? 0 and 1, or 1 and 2?
If they are 0 and 1, try moving the cable to the IDE 0 port.
Is the drive in the outermost connector on the cable, and is it jumpered to master? It needs to be for it to work right.
The master drive setting for the drive on your Sonnet card should be fine, with or without the SCSI card installed.

Most of the drive are set by default as Cable Select (CS)
Master (MA) is where you need to connect one end of the ribbon cable. The other end to the ATA card. The one in the middle is the SLave (SL) ATA JUMPER Settings

One drive at the time. make sure the ribbon cable is placed correctly, it should have "key" or "tab" which should prevent you to insert into the connector wrongly. Also one of female connector should one hole plugged.

Connect the cable to the ATA card and the HD, and the HD power connector. With the mac off, press the CUDA button. The CUDA is close to the battery. The are two buttons the CUDA is the closest one. The other one wil turn one the Mac.

Power the mac on and see if yo can install the OS.

Hope this help

I have the pale yellow cable. Could my Sonnet Card not be compatible with my Maxtor Hard Drive? I think what Im going to do is run 2 internal 50GB Seagate SCSI HD's. One for Mac OS 9 Classic and the other for OS X 10.4 and then get an external firewire HD case with a fan for my 200GB. I'll let you all know if this solves my problem. Thank you for all the help. Cheers!
