Trying to replace my SCSI HD or Replace with an ATA in my B&W G3

Hi all,

I've been trying to add new HD's to my B&W 400mhz G3. When I was given the Computer it had 2 68pin 9GB SCSI HD's (which are still in it) I Bought an Maxtor 7200 RPM Ultra ATA/133 200GB & 100GB HD's. I've installed the 100GB but it wouldn't boot up. I tried using the Mac OS 9 disk to format it as well. And nothing. I did a lil more research and found that I might need an Ultra ATA PCI Card. I bought a Sonnet 133 ATA PCI Card. I installed the Firmware and card. And still no go. What am I doing wrong? I'm ready to buy a 50GB SCSI HD. I want to use my Mac for my iPod, surf the internet, Recording Music and to do Graphics. I also would like to use both Drives, one for OS 10 and the other Mac OS 9.

Cheers!
Steve

Cheers!

I hope it's not inapropriate to tailgate onto Charles Baisden's post/thread but I have exactly the same B&W box with (in all probability) the same SCSI card(Adaptec 2940U2B Ultra 2 LVD/SE) as he does and I am in the middle of attempting same sort of SCSI hard drive upgrade as he is.

My B&W came with 9.1 GB Quantum SCSI drive running off of the the afore mentioned PCI SCSI card and I just added a 73GB Seagate Cheetah SCSI drive to that particular SCSI bus (there are two other SCSI cards in two remaining PCI slots).

The 9.1 GB SCSI drive is installed in bay #1, a 10GB ATA drive in bay #2 and the new Seagate SCSI drive in bay #3 (bit of a shoehorn at 1-1/2 inches tall).

The Seagate drive is 80 pin with the converter card Grant mentioned to adapt it to one of the 68 pin connectors on the ribbon that connects the 9.1 GB drive to the SCSI card.

With the 9.1 GB drive set to ID=0 (no jumpers) I tried the Seagate jumpered to ID=1, ID=2 and ID=3, each in turn, (there are no other SCSI devices on this SCSI bus, I have a SCSI scanner set to ID=5 but plugged into one of the other PCI SCSI cards which means it's on a separtate bus and should therefore be irrelevant SCSI ID-wise).

In all three instances, not only would the Seagate drive not mount but the 9.1 GB Quantum drive (boot drive) would not mount either.(In other words, with the seagate attached, that entire SCSI bus is not functioning???!)

At startup, after a few blinks of the dreaded flashing question mark (the B&W is hunting for the invisible 9.1 GB boot drive) it defaulted to booting from OSX on the ATA drive and then only the ATA drive would mount.

If I shutdown and disconnected the seagate SCSI drive and rebooted, the 9.1 SCSI drive would then (as the designated boot drive) startup and of course mount per normal along with the ATA drive.

I don't know much more about this than Charles does, but it seems to me the two SCSI drives are behaving as though they both have same SCSI ID even though they don't.

Are there any other obvious/not so obvious considerations that influence this behavior?

Thanks for any insight.

PS

Per Grants post, I downloaded;

60409- Ultra SCSI Card 1.2 Firmware Update: Document and Software

but I haven't installed it because the Read Me repeatedly indicates it wants OS 8.6 present to execute the upgrade and pointedly makes no reference to any version of OS9 which is what I'm running. I'm thinking because I'm running OS 9.2.2 that I have more recent firmware and could be gumming up the works by installing the referenced and possibly outdated 8.6 compliant firmware?

Again, sorry if I'm hijacking Charles inquiry and thanks for any insight.

A quick addendum, I somehow erroneously latched onto this thread, similar to the one I referenced in my post but not the one I thought I was. (Gotta pay attention with tabbed browsing)

Anyway the subject is still relevant, my new SCSI hard drive won't mount when connected to a functioning SCSI bus in my 400mhz B&W.

Thanks for any insight.

dvandam-

Why don't you cut-and-paste your post above into a
brand new thread with an appropriate title. That will
get you better results.

Grant,

After referencing Charles Baisden's;

"How to install a 2nd HD??/"

but then, through my own inattention, tacking it onto mancalledsunn's;

"Trying to replace my SCSI HD or Replace with an ATA in my B&W G3"

I didn't want to further confuse the issue by reposting from scratch but I think you're right.

Please, anybody who makes it all the way down to this clumsey false start on my part, per Grants suggestion, I've cut and pasted my intitial piggy back post into a fresh thread titled;

"73GB Seagate SCSI Drive Won't Mount (LONG)"

Thanks for your indulgence,

Dennis van Dam
