iTunes has detected a problem with your audio configuration. Audio/Video playback may not operate properly

Use Edit > Preferences > Playback and look at the entry for Play Audio Using. This will normally be set to either Direct Sound or Windows Audio Session. Changing to the other setting may help. If not set back to the first option and apply once more.

Or try iTunes for Windows: If you have trouble playing music or other audio.

I had this problem too after updating some other software on my PC. Finally managed to resolve it by plugging some speakers in and itunes opened ok. Although after the first time it doesn't appear to continue to need to have the speakers plugged in.

Ah yes, you're not the only one that has run into that. iTunes 12.8 seems to require an active set of speakers even if you have no intention of using them because you're using iTunes as a server for other devices or just use AirPlay. 😕

what we can do?

I had this same issue. After reinstalling itunes, I got the same message. Then I plugged in headphones in the headphones jack and it fixed the problem. Pretty simple. 😕
