MacBook Pro 15' (MacBookPro14,3) With Thunderbolt Display via Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter (Apple)

At Apple store & another more reputable Mac reseller there were some questions about the compatibility of all of this

, so I expected this all not to work .

I hadn't seen anything here on the compatibility of this so more of a confirmation that the new MacBookPro w Touch Bar works well with the 27"Thunderbolt Display via Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter (Apple) works great .

Since 2012 when using the 27"Thunderbolt Display with all Macs I had used , most recently the 2011 MacBook Pro (MacBookPro8,1) from day one there were sleep wake issues , USB & Firewire disk would randomly mount unmount etc. , as well as the USB & Firewire peripherals mics / headphones & other legacy media . Or just generally buggy .

Have had no issues in the last month using the 27"Thunderbolt Display with the MacBookPro w Touch Bar works via Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter (Apple) .

Initial Transferring files & Apps via Firewire went smoothly . Firewire drives , peripherals mics / headphones & other legacy media simply as well as wake sleep works smoothly . Everything just kinda works how I expected it to back in 2012

Guessing if starting from scratch this isn't going to be anyones first choice for a set up , but if you have a 27"Thunderbolt Display & legacy devices or needs it does work well

Hi Charles - I want to upgrade to the new 13" MBP with Touch Bar and touch sensor . But I am hesitant because my TB 27" display won't work with my MB Air 2013 if the magsafe charger isn't plugged into the MB Air regardless if the MB Air has a full charge or not. Did you have the same experience before upgrading to the MBP with USB-c charger?

With the 2011 MacBookPro8,1 I could just use Thunderbolt 2 for the display without the MagSafe for power .

15' MacBookPro14,3 seems to work same just with USB C / Thunderbolt 3

Curious- Good to hear this works but how are you powering your new MacBook Pro since the dual connector coming out of the T-display is not compatible w/ usb-c? I realize you can convert the thunderbolt 2 to 3, but what about the MagSafe power cord? Thanks for your input.

I have just been using the Apple power brick to power MacBookPro14,3 at the desktop .

I have a older OWC drive that will charge the new MacBook Pro via dongle but ended up using the dongle elsewhere .

Most likely will get the one of the OWC desktop docks the USB-C Dock or Thunderbolt 3 Dock that has the ability to charge MacBookPro14,3 , as well as get back to the one cord connects everything & could just leave the Apple power brick in the travel bag .

Oddly the DVD / CD drive is my only lacking bit at the moment & OWC SuperSlim USB 2.0 optical drive external enclosure hopefully will solve this issue .

I am really waiting to see what real world need is dongle / doc wise before ending up with a pile of half working junk .

Most of my compact flash & sd card readers are Firewire 800 they work using Thunderbolt Display via Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter (Apple) , at the Firewire 800 consistent speeds , this really surprised me .

I had found the usb 2/3 card readers to be well slow unreliable crap , that would fail at the most inconvenient time . Usb 2/3 card readers the more data you put through them the slower they would get this doesn't seem to be the case with USB-C / Thunderbolt 3 .

So finding a portable USB-C / Thunderbolt 3 card readers is one of the next things .

Hoping the true USB-C Dock or Thunderbolt 3 dongles really work & finding it confusing pain to sort out what the good stuff is much seems to be adapted USB 2/3 stuff .
