Pages will not allow me to make text styles

Pages 7.1 in High Sierra, I SELECTED two words manually styled within an auto page created book. I click the TEXT menu, STYLE menu, Character Styles menu, but the PLUS is grayed out, REDEFINE FROM SELECTION is grayed out.

How do I get the PLUS to change from gray to black, and to turn on REDEFINE FROM SELECTION?

The ‘+’ control button will be greyed out if the selected text contains content without any active character styles, or ‘None’ as the selected style.

Apply a character style, to some selected text and the control will become active, and you will be able to create a new character style based on the selected text.

You don’t have to apply character styles using the Character Styles drop down menu. You can use Format > Font > [and select a character style option], or use a keyboard shortcut to apply a style.

...what does Rename Style suggest to you?

The specific Template, which you finally told us you were using, is aimed at the production of eBooks.

As such it may be restricted to the preset styles, features, and XML used in eBooks.

To isolate a problem, you need to be clear about what you are using, what happens when you vary what you are doing, and where it is different.

I don't think I can help you further.

I am guessing that by ‘this’, you intend the Blank Book template, and that you intend also to say that, ‘it’ the ‘+’ control button works in other template/documents.

Assuming the above is correct, and if using the template and the styles and settings that the Blank Book template offers is important, then simply emulate the template in a custom template using some other template as the starting document.

Alternatively, you could reinstall Pages, and see if that fixes your issue.

You mean Toolbar > Format > Sidebar > Text > Character Styles?

I am using Pages 7.1 in Sierra and it works for me.

The only thought I have is that you have a font which does not have a bold or italic and you are using that but it does not constitute a real exception.

Try doing something more radical such as change the actual font or color and see if that lets you create a new Character Style, once created, change that to what you want.

There appears to be a bug in 7.1.

Here is one way you may reproduce it…

  1. Open the Blank word processing template
  2. In default Body paragraph style add some text, e.g. ‘Test’ at the top of the page
  3. Select text ‘Test’ and try any of the following
  4. Change the font colour, apply Bold, Italic or Underline using the buttons; keyboard shortcuts or, Format > Fonts > Menu option
  5. Note the Character style control does not display the usual override.

After you apply the 'Link' character style, ignore the greyed out arrow menu options, and tap the ‘+’ control at the top right of the Character Styles dialogue.

This should create a new style called ‘Link 1’ All this does is duplicate the Link style, and lets you rename the style.

Next, edit the selected text with the ‘Link 1’ character style applied to it e.g. select it, and add emphasis [cmd+b].

You should see an asterisk appear on the Character Styles label e.g. ‘Link 1*’.

Tap on the button and you should see a dialogue like this:

From here you can Update the style ‘Link 1’ or tap the grey arrow and select any of the usual menu options.

In macOS it is Toolbar/Format/Text/Style/ however, I believe I needed to make paragraph styles, rather than text styles. THAT WORKED for heads and body text styles.

BUT, I selected one character in the body, went to the CHARACTER STYLES and neither the plus sign nor REDEFINE FROM SELECTION was available.

Can you tell me what type of character will make the settings available? I selected a Janson Text character To make the new selection but the items Mentioned were grayed.

You're right, I left out Pages; should have read macOS/Pages/Toolbar . . . I thought you might be running windows. OK.

Character Styles:

How do I get the X in character style window (clicking) to stop being gray? I select one character, a word, then several words, then several sentences, and none of these selections will get the X to turn black, so I can't add a new character style.

Do I have to have a character alone in a text box, or alone in a shape for it to work?

Forget Paragraph styles, I understand and can do it.
