Page numbering in word processing document

I have an OS High Sierra, version 10.13.6. In a word processing document I follow the HELP instructions for page numbering with the beginning number starting several pages into the document. But most of my pop-up options are grayed out. What's wrong? Thanks.

Hi John,

We can't see what you are doing, nor can we see which pop-up options are greyed, so "I followed the HELP instructions" is meaningless in terms of our knowing what actions you took and what results you saw.

Starting page numbering (at 1) "several pages into the document" requires:

  • starting a new section with the page on which you want 'page 1' to appear.
  • opening the Format inspector and choosing Section
  • unchecking the box labeled "match previous section'
  • changing the "Page numbers continue from previous section" menu item to Page numbers start at 1
  • clicking in the header or footer box in which you want the page number to appear, then choosing the format of that page number from the 'number' pop-up.

Thanks, Barry, for your quick reply. It helped me locate the problem, but not to solve it.

When I INSERT > SECTION at page 7 from the toolbar, the page thumbnails blink. But there's no indication that the section includes anything but page 7. Pages 8--- are supposed to show a pale colored background, but they don't.

If I open the FORMAT inspector, I don't see SECTION.

SECTION is located in the DOCUMENT inspector.

There I can uncheck "match previous selection," but I can't change to "page numbers start at . . ." because it's grayed out, as is START AT (page number).

Should I take this to "chat?"

I'm working in Pages version 7.2 5869, if that's helpful. Thanks, John M

Hi John,

My examples are in Pages 5.6.2. There may be differences in Pages 7.

"If I open the FORMAT inspector, I don't see SECTION.

SECTION is located in the DOCUMENT inspector."

My error. Sorry.

"When I INSERT > SECTION at page 7 from the toolbar, the page thumbnails blink. But there's no indication that the section includes anything but page 7."

Insert > Section inserts a Section (with the minimum one page) at the end of the document section containing the insertion point (by placing a Section Break at the end of the text on the last page of this section).

Insert > Section Break inserts a section break character at the location of the insertion point, pushing everything (text and objects set to Move with Text) after the insertion point and before the next section break into the new section.

I do remember having some difficulty getting the "continue from previous/start at n" settings to show, and didn't keep notes of the steps I took before they became available. Memory says changing the Headers and Footers checkboxes and/or the other available Section settings may have been involved.
