I have been an icloud user for many years. I periodically clean out my inbox by sorting the messages, by sender, then deleting whole blocks of messages. I just tried to sort and it appears the only option is sort by date, either oldest or newest first. What happened to other sort options?

They were removed during an 'upgrade' to the iCloud Software.
Are you trying to do this at iCloud.com/Mail or in the Mail program? In the Mail program, there are sort options.
Then I guess its time to move away from Apple. I have owned iMacs, Mac Minis, MacBook Pros, dozens of phones and iPads. The ability to sort and manage emails is a basic requirement impacting the usability of all IOS devices. I think this was done to force people to buy additional storage. Bye Apple!
