How to add/remove labels in the Finder

Finder Preferences : Tags panel. Click '+' to add new tag names to the list. Enter the new tag name, and press return to set it. Then click on the actual No Color tag image to the left of the new tag name. I panel of tag colors will descend from which to assign a color to the new tag name.

Any tagnames that appear in the first paragraph, will be available instantly by:

1. Finder Preferences : Sidebar

   Locate the Tags section and select the square box to enable it.

2. Open a FInder Window, and scroll downward in its sidebar until you encounter its Tags section. If no tags appear here yet, slide your mouse to the right on the same line as Tags until you see, and click "Show".

Apple removed the old label style with the release of Mavericks (10.9) in 2013.

In Finder Preference : Tags panel, you can add new tag names, with the restriction to only 6 colors, and None. In the Finder, you can add one or more of these tags by right-clicking on the file(s)/folder(s) and selecting the Tags… menu item. Once the Tags… panel pops open, you can select one or more of the available tags to assign, followed by a return to set them.

In Applications that support it, you can click on the filename that appears in the Title bar at the top of a document, and this will present a panel where you can also select one or more tags for the given file.

In a Finder window, there is a search field in the upper right corner. Or, there is Spotlight. You can search for all blue tags using the following syntax:

tags:blue

tags:"This green quoted tag name"

Pick a blank one, or create a new one. Right-click on the tag and choose the color (Blue or Orange in this case).
