Hi,
I noticed today that face recognition in Photos only works for photos in my library, not for photos in shared albums. Did anybody else notice that or could it be just a problem on my side?

That's right. Unless the photos from the Shared Albums are imported into the library Photos can't do any processing, i.e. face recognition, add metadata, etc. on them.
