Syncing: How to stop it?

I don't want to sync. Tho I have a feeling I may have activated syncing somehow because it seems like my MacBook Pro is somehow suddenly down 40 gigs and I don't know how else it could've happened.

Where are synced files stored on a mac, in this case MacBook Pro? I"ve looked around, don't see them.

iMac HD fills up my MacBook Pro, trying to figure out some options I have iCloud but when my iPhone, iMac, and MacBook all sync the MacBook (oldest of the lot 2019), gets full. I love the syncing functionality that I can access my iMac files when I'm not at home but it seems like you're a slave to the weakest link here e.g. the device that has the smallest HD space. Is there any way to tell the MacBook to only sync certain things? I'm no pro at this so I could just be missing something simple. Thanx Jay

If I uncheck 'Optimize Mac Storage' do my files still sync to iCloud? If I delete a large file from my computer does it get deleted from iCloud as well?
