I connect iPhone 6s belonging to my son to erase all data. Enter appleID and password known to be valid. iPhone offers ERASE but says verification failed, there was an error connecting to the Apple ID server. How do I erase it?

go to settings>general>reset>erase all content and settings.

that link says the system is up. You may be having a different issue. Can you post a screenshot of the warning you are getting?
Does not work. Says verification failed due to apple server error
If find my phone is on there is no way around that. You have to turn it off or answer the security questions.
