graphics card mac mini 2010

I have a mid 2010 mac mini with the maximum features that were available at the time. I am not even using all my memory by a long shot. This mac however is extremely sluggish. I have updated the software to OS X Yosemite 10.10.5. My question is, is there a way to install a faster processing chip or better video chip that will make it stream movies better and also not run so slow? I have always been careful to try to store data on an external hard drive so that I don't gum up my RAM or other memory with files. Its still fairly underused. Please let me know....

Since you already have the machine specced out, there's probably nothing you can do.

The following can be upgraded:

RAM to a maximum of 8GB

Storage (I would recommend upgrading to an SSD)

You can't however, upgrade the CPU or GPU since they are sautered onto the Logic Board.

Hope this helps,
Richard

You may want to check what sort of compatibility settings that the 4K Samsung has.

I would start playing with that first and see what results you get. You may also want

to try different inputs on the set (not sure if the new Samsungs are all HDMI or still

a mix).

It also sounds like your Mini is connected via WiFi, which may be an issue.

Amazon Prime and Netflix work fine with my 2010 Mini. Of course, it is connected

to a standard Samsung HD TV (1080P). It is also connected via ethernet and I have

a 250 Mbit internet connection.

If your issue is with streaming video, answer the following:

-What streaming video services are you having issue with?

-What sort of network connection do you have? Both within your home and via ISP to internet.

-In terms of the streaming service, do they use Adobe Flash, HTML5, Silverlight, etc.?

-Also related to the above (especially Flash), do you have hardware acceleration

enabled or disabled?

-What quality settings are you using for your streaming? Depending on your

home networking and your internet connection speed from your ISP, you could

be limited by these.

There are many other things that can effect streaming quality besides the Mini

that you have and can have a much greater impact. FWIW, I have a 2010 Mini

that can receive 1080P video streams and playback 1080p video files at full

quality with no issue what so ever.

If you are trying to playback 4K video, there is simply no way a 2010 Mini can do that.

"What streaming video services are you having issue with?" - Netflix and Amazon Prime. It chokes and stops and takes forever to load.

"What sort of network connection do you have? Both within your home and via ISP to internet." - I have Spectrum 100 and its run via a modem and router in the next room. My TV, ipad, phone and laptop and mac mini seem to connect just fine. I also have an apple airport to boost the signal as well and to share data across all my apple devices.

"In terms of the streaming service, do they use Adobe Flash, HTML5, Silverlight, etc.?" - I do believe its running on Silverlight. Could that be the problem?

"

Also related to the above (especially Flash), do you have hardware acceleration

enabled or disabled?" - I have no idea...

"

home networking and your internet connection speed from your ISP, you could

be limited by these." - I will have to look. not sure....

"If you are trying to playback 4K video, there is simply no way a 2010 Mini can do that." - We just got a new Samsung TV that it is hooked up to (which is pretty much when the problem started). It is 4k so perhaps that is the issue? Should I just plug in my mac mini to the older TV in the living room? It seemed to work better on that one.....

Awesome, thanks. Yeah I think I will just plug it back into the old TV as that way I can plug the ethernet in too right there and I will be doing most of my recording in the living room anyway. The living room TV is the 1080 and I already know it works there. Thank you so much! You just saved me a ton of money (was going to go get it upgraded at a store)....
