failure of High Sierra and Apple
After upgrade to High Sierra my mac will not send pictures through the messages app. I have tried everything shown online to fix this problem to no avail. Every time Apple does an upgrade they screw something up.

Hey fishnlady (love the name!) ! I'm back. Sorry to be late but I was away from the computer much of yesterday and didn't see your response until this morning.
Thanks for the report--it holds some key clues.
First is this:
Mounted Volumes:
disk0s2 - Macintosh HD 999.35 GB (49.19 GB free)
Your hard drive is nearly full with less than 5 percent free space. You need to delete stuff you no longer need and off-load things you need to save to external disks or thumb drives. A good rule of thumb is to keep at least 10 percent free space to allow for "surprises" that can come up during things like system upgrades, when more space is needed temporarily. On your hard drive 10 percent is roughly 100GB.
That alone may move your performance to the "good" category in Etrecheck and hopefully fix the image placement issue.
You have Google Chrome launching as soon as you start the computer. That means it is running in the backgorund all the time. If you look at the report's section on "Top Processes by Memory":
---------------------
Top Processes by Memory:
| Process (count) | Source | RAM usage | Location |
| Google Chrome Helper (13) | Google, Inc. | 1.85 GB | |
| kernel_task | Apple | 858 MB | |
| mdworker (13) | Apple | 411 MB | |
| Google Chrome | Google, Inc. | 332 MB | |
| Finder | Apple | 183 MB |
------------------------
you'll see Chrome and its minions were using ~25 percent of your RAM at the time of the test. That's huge. I'm on Safari right now with 18 tabs open on my iMac and it is only using a small fraction of the RAM Chrome has usurped. Chrome is s known resource hog on both Mac and Windows computers. If you must use it, launch it only when needed and close it when done. Also consider adding RAM if you must keep using Chrome. Adding two 2GB modules would be inexpensive and put you art 12GB. I only buy RAM from Crucial.com or Other World Computing. They've never failed me or our Macs.

In order to determine if there's any 3rd party software that's contributing to the problem boot into Safe Mode, Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode, and try sending images thru Messages from there.
If you're successful then you have some 3rd party software in your account that's preventing sending photos.
Next, log into another user account on your Mac and try sending photos from there. Any improvement?
You do have an item in the User Login Items that looks strange:
User Login Items:
Viber Application (? - installed 2018-05-09)
(~/.Trash/Viber 4.33.31 PM.app)
Why is it in the Trash. I'd uninstall it according to the developer's instructions and see if that makes a difference.
Allen Jones here is the report. Thank you for your help.

End of report
fish lady,
It's likely something you did to your system. Instead of ranting about Apple how about doing something constructive and clearly stating what problem you are experiencing and what troubleshooting you have already tried?
You seem to not have read my post. I said: After upgrade to High Sierra my mac will not send pictures through the messages app. I had no problems before the upgrade so it has to be something that changed with the upgrade. I do not call that ranting. I only need constructive help, not ridicule. Thanks anyway.
Hi Allan,
Thanks for your input about Google Chrome. I had no idea it was that bad. The reason I started using it is because so many of the places I visit with Safari would with have the lettering overlapping so badly I couldn't make out what it was saying. With Chrome I did not have that problem. I never did figure that one out.
I knew I had 1 TB of hard drive but did not realize how much Ram I had or needed. I will order and install more. Also I have the Time Machine. I have a ton of photos and documents on my computer and wanted to put them on the time capsule but I haven't taken the time to learn how to do that. I don't know how to use it for storage. With all the moves we have made since leaving Alaska I have stayed too busy to delve into it. Since buying it, I also now have 4 small poodles that take up a huge amount of my time but love every minute of it. Life is much different than living in Alaska and going fishing so often.
Thank you very much for your reply and help. It is very much appreciated.
fishnlady Gail
Glad to help. Let me emphasize that the biggest issue is hard drive space not RAM. Your RAM is probably fine if yo udon;t have Chrome open all the time.
The reason I started using it is because so many of the places I visit with Safari would with have the lettering overlapping so badly I couldn't make out what it was saying.
That could be a couple of fixable things in Safari:
1) Sometimes the zoom in/out settings in Safari will cause that text issue. Play with those settings; they are under the Safari "View" menu.
2) Safari extensions, especailly those that have not been updated to meet modern Safari needs, can give what Apple calls, "Unexpected results." You have three older extensions:
----------------
Safari Extensions:
| Add To Amazon Wish List.safariextz - Amazon.com - https://www.amazon.com/wishlist?ref=cm_wl_saf_ext (installed 2014-05-06) |
| Awesome Screenshot.safariextz - Diigo - http://www.diigo.com/ (installed 2014-08-22) |
| YoutubeWide.safariextz - Pedrocc - http://www.pedrocc.com/safari (installed 2014-05-06) |
----------
You can easily turn them off in Safari Preferences > Extensions tab. In the past Awesome Screenshot was problematic in that the download included adware. However I do not see any adware in the Etrecheck report. If you like those extensions try to update them.
If you lived in Alaska you will always be a fishin' lady regardless of where you live today. Fishing is a discipline, not a sport, and a good one.
I need to run errands but I'll check back in tonight.
Fish on!
Allan
Another browser option. See if the pages that don't like Safari display correctly in FireFox. It is a very nice browser and nowhere near the system gobbler that is Chrome. Get FireFox only from the developers' site here:
Internet for people, not profit — Mozilla
Old Toad,
Great catch on that item being in the Trash! 👍-1F3FC; I totally missed it.
Allan, I was just looking at my Mac by going to the apple and clicking on "About the Mac" there seems to be a discrepancy on the EtreCheck about the amount of free space on my hard drive. Here is a picture I took of what it says on my computer. I don't think 430.78 use of 999.35 would pose a problem but soon I will have it down further by moving some photos and files off. What do you think?
Weird! I've never seen one of those with the gray hashmarks in the bar. The storage estimate in "About this Mac' tend to be quite, well, flaky. Yours isn't even reporting "System."
I just opened mine (2010 iMac 27; 2.93ghz quad-core i7, 1TB SATA drive) and "Storage" showed the System at 137GB which is outrageous. After the Storage window was open for a minute or two it changed to 34GB which is much more believeable. Mine, after settling down:
The yellow is "System." Hovering the mouse over a color shows the size of each storage category. Let yours sit there a few minutes and see if the values change/normalize. If the HD is really full it may take longer to resolve.
In addition to Etrecheck's reporting--which I trust--you can do one of the following:
1) Single-click your hard drive's icon, then do command i from the keyboard. That should give this:
The numbers I've outlined in red should be accurate.
2) In the Overview pane of About this Mac, click "System Report" to launch your built-in System Information utility. When SI opens, find "Storage" in the left-hand contentspane. You should get this:
All your volumes like your external drive will show up so make sure your boot partition, probably "Macintosh HD" unless you changed it, is selected. Note the capacities listed in the main pane.
3) Find Disk Utility in Applications > Utilities and launch it. It opens to this:
As you are on High Sierra and the screenshot is from "plain" Sierra (OS 10.12), your version of DU will have a "View" icon at the far left end of the gray header bar. Select the view option, "Show All Devices" if it is not selected.
So, let's see where that goes and then look at it tomorrow. I have music practice tonight and expect to crash-n-burn when I get home.
Hi Allan,
I know my computer is in a mess file wise. With the failure of WD external hard drives and getting as much off the second one as I could before it totally failed has made for a mess that I am constantly working on in spare time.
Here is the pic again with the grey lines that you thought was weird. It says that area is Other Volumes in Container 16708 GB
Allan, thanks for your help and your time. Maybe I should just get all my files off of this computer and wipe it clean to start over. Seems there are too many issues with it right now. Nice talking with you and I really do appreciate your trying to help.
Hello fishnlady,
The only explanation I would have for this discrepancy is Time Machine local snapshots or maybe versions. You have an iMac so, theoretically, you shouldn't have local snapshots. But it is possible that versions accounts for that. Those features might use hard links which could screw up free space calculations.
EtreCheck gets it free space value from the "FreeSpace" field of:
diskutil info -plist /dev/disk0s2
You could also run:
df -h
(Both of these are Terminal commands)
Hi Allen, thanks for the advice. My report is posted. Not sure you can find anything since the report says it shows nothing bad. Either way I appreciate your help.
Let's hope that fixes the problem.
