Upgrade RAM iMac (2011

Hi! My iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011) is running slow. I checked with EtreCheck, no major issues but a possibility to upgrade RAM.

Can you please advice which size should I get? Should I replace all four banks, do they have to be equal size?

Thank you in advance!

P.S.Here is the report:

EtreCheck version: 4.3.6 (4D041)

See Install memory in an iMac - Apple Support

They do need to be equal size.

It really depends on or use case. Do you edit audio/photos/videos? Do you always have 30+ tabs open in your browser? If so, more ram is always good, especially on a desktop since you don't have to worry about it eating your battery.

I should get 2x8GB. In that case I will have 20GB RAM, but is it ok form iMac?

You can only max at 16Gb (4x4Gb). The other options are:

  • 1x4Gb=4Gb
  • 2x4Gb=8Gb
  • 3x4Gb=12Gb
  • 2x2Gb=4Gb (base configuration)
  • 3x2Gb=6Gb
  • 4x2Gb=8Gb

Also note that you should use 2GB or 4GB RAM SO-DIMMs of 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM in each slot.

it's said that maximum upgrade available is 16GB.

That was true at time of introduction of the model, when 8 GB modules weren’t available yet.

I also noticed some software in the report, that you should get rid of, as they may be a cause of slow-downs:

Launch Daemons:

hdjsd.plist (if it is obscured, it can’t be good)

Clean My Mac (causes more problems than it claims to solve)

Disc Soft DAEMON Tools (old version)

User Launch Agents:

DivX agent (when did you last use the specialty DivX Player? It doesn’t need to run always in the background.)

NIHardwareAgent (do you still use Controller Editor for Traktor?)

Internet Plug-ins:

o1dbrowserplugin (2015; not sure what it’s for; even if it was legit, you can do without now.)

OVSHelper (2012; seems to be part of the Open Video System that DivX was trying to promote back in the day)

DivXBrowserPlugin (2012; who watches DivX on the web anymore?)

googletalkbrowserplugin (2015; If Google Talk still exists, is doesn’t rely on a plugin anymore.)

SharePointBrowserPlugin (2017; Do you even use MS Office SharePoint functionality at all?)

EPPEX Plugin (2011; Do you even use Canon Easy-PhotoPrint EX anymore? Replaced by Canon My Image Garden software.)

User Internet Plug-ins:

Picasa (2012; discontinued, obsolete)

Google Earth Web Plug-in (2013; obsolete, no longer via plugin)

3rd Party Preference Panes:

DivX (2012; obsolete)

hueyPRO (2009; Nine years ago! Does the hueyPRO monitor calibration system even run on today’s macOS? Probably not.)
