app icon disappeared from ipad

This is my iPad Pro running iOS 11.4.1. The app is Notability.

I use Notability a lot. Yesterday, I went to show it to a friend--but it was not in the folder it should have been in. I used search to find it, and ran it. So it was definitely still on the iPad.

When I got home, I wanted to put the app icon back where it belonged--but I could not find it anywhere on the iPad. Search does not put it in a folder. It seems to put it on the main iPad screen. But I still went through every folder and--to be sure I didn't miss anything--rearranged the apps in each folder alphabetically. Notability was definitely not there.

It was also not on the main screens.

I followed a lot of different instructions, up to and including deleting and reinstalling the app, which I just did. Now, the app is back and I can run it--but I can't find it. I still can only access it via search.

Does anyone have any idea how I can move the app icon back into the folder it belongs in if I can't find the app icon?

Hi terydeb,

Thanks for following up with us. If you decide to reset the home screen layout on your iPad Pro, it will not affect any system or app settings. It would remove the Home screen customized folders and arrangements for apps on your iPad Pro. After the reset is completed you would need to arrange the apps in to their respective folders again.

In case you would like to restore the data (including Home screen layout) to your iPad Pro as it is now, it would be a good idea to make a backup to iCloud or iTunes first:

Hello terydeb,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities! I understand that the Notablity app icon is missing from the Home screen of your iPad Pro. It sounds like you've done some great troubleshooting to help isolate possible causes and I would be happy to help point you towards a resolution.

If you haven't already done so, let's make sure the iPad Pro has been restarted:

Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

If the app icon is still missing, you can try to reset your home screen layout next. This will reset the home screen layout back to factory defaults and you would need to move your apps back to folders again. You can find that option under Settings > General > Reset > Reset Home Screen Layout.

Let us know what happens from here.

Take care!

Thanks for the response.

I tried restarting. No difference.

I read about resetting the home screen layout back to factory preferences but was a little concerned about trying it. I don't mind recreating folders, but will that reset change anything other than taking apps out of folders and putting them on the home screen? Will it reset any system or app settings? If so, I might have to live with just searching to find the app.
