iMac not visible in target disk mode

When I start my iMac in Target Disk Mode, connect it to my MacBook Pro via a Thunderbolt III to Thunderbolt II adaptor then cable, I cannot see it from my Laptop as an external disk.

The reverse works fine when I fire up the laptop in Target Disk Mode using the same cable.

Any suggestions?

iMac with Retina 5K display, macOS Sierra (10.12.6), 2017

Just rebooted the iMac whilst connected to laptop. And when I ejected the iMac, and reconnected it, the laptop recognised it.
